I doubt it was soley pre order numbers in a "$ sort of way" beyond it is a way of measuring customer reaction to be honest. There was plenty of twitter and other activity that would have signaled to MS that right or wrong they weren't getting across to customers why they thought XO had some great new stuff.I think the only, single reason Microsoft has made changes is because of the pre order numbers. I don't think they wanted to nor expected to have such a negative reaction. I think they thought that they could do this and the gamers / customers would just swallow the money shot.
I have no empirical proof but I suspect pre order numbers actually make up a single digit % of lifetime sales over it's expected 10 year life so whilst yes, the numbers would have been involved I suspect it was more as a measure of customer feedback than OMG we won't make $s at Christmas and XO is only ever going to sell 3 boxes (although of course that would be a consideration)".
Either way, the fact that they listened and continue to change things suggests to me an absolutely opposite of arrogance and disregard for their customers requirements/thoughts/feelings. Not many global companies would have the grace to stand up and say "we got it wrong, how about this instead" to it's customers.
