Talk to me about warm socks people.

I take it that merino is the material to go for. If so, which make? I'd rather not spend the earth. I also can fit quite a thick sock in my shoes.

Also, hats to go under helmets (so not super thick). Thoughts?

I wear Defeet Woolie Bullie socks in winter. They do a thin and a think version if I remember.

For headwear I've got a couple of Walz winter caps (with Cap: SCR -1 embroidered into the ear flap) and a couple of Giro merino winter caps. The Grio ones are my favourite and I wouldn't be without them in winter. Much better than windstopper caps and the like.

I have some Planet-X merino socks, in both their thick and thin guises. I also have some Endura BaaBaa merino socks. The thin Planet-X socks are almost identical to the Enduras despite being much cheaper, and the thick ones are quite a bit warmer. I did consider some DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks, but they're rather pricey and were out of stock in my size back when I was buying socks. They do get fantastic reviews, however I'm not sure they're worth 3x the price of the Planet-X ones.

Apparently I type too slowly, and everybody else has beaten me to the punch ;)

Am I the only one who can't stand the font that Lightweight use on their products?

It just makes it all incredibly boring.

As for Assos, they can only get away with what people are willing to pay.
Presumably there are strings of high earners who always buy Assos because its position as being marketed as the best.

Actually I much prefer it to the gaudy and not so classy 'splash your logo all over the wheels' approach...

Like I said, the font, as that is all there is to the logo. Given how nearly all brands tend to go for Sans-Serif fonts as good design principles, Lightweight use a Serif font which makes it look terribly dated and a bit rubbish.

Logos are more of a preference thing though and as they tend to be stickers, you can usually remove them from wheels, regardless of who makes them.... that wasn't really my comment.

I totally agree, the font they use is awful and totally puts me off.

On a different subject, with an 11 speed 11-28 cassette versus a 10 speed 11-28, which gear do you gain?

On a 10-speed, an 11-28 is probably 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28
So i'd guess that and 11 speed would reduce the gaps around the 21-24-28 sprockets. Possibly 21-23-25-28? Or it might include a 16.

I bought woolie boolie ones as well, I got them for last winter as the ones I had weren't warm enough, I actually think no single pair of socks are warm enough, I tried 2 pairs and much better :)

Looking at some alternatives to my current pedals (cheap straps that don't even fit my gym trainers). Was wondering how difficult Clip based pedals are? Only used mountain bike pedals before and this is all I am used to, no connecting and no worries about sliding my foot off if I need to.

I understand that if I do get clips I'd have to get some shoes that attach, could these shoes be used in the gym or am I better off just carrying my gym shoes in a bag?
