Hypothetical question regarding 3 x 7970's

I have two at present that perform great. I have the chance to get a third which I will use for my second PC or add a third to mine. Presumably this won't be enough to power three? Seasonic

Annoyingly, only a couple of month old.

The seasonic x750 could definitely power 3 7970's without overclocking if paired with a power efficient cpu (1155/1150)

It would be pushing it though, and most people would consider you crazy for even attempting it.

The only problem is it doesn't come with enough pci connectors, not sure if I'd risk using adapters.

Cheers. Neither CPU or current 7970's have been overclockers by myself but yeah it's a risk.

I would have to change the PSU if I was to try it.

The main reason for buying was to put it in the other pc but would have been nice to benchmark differences between 2 7970's and 3.

Tbh you wouldn't have to change the psu. Since the x750 is single rail using adapters will actually probably be fine. It's normally on multi rail ones where issues with adapters happen. Your call though ;)

Here's another test showing total system power consumption with 3x7970's.

Don't forget these are wall readings (i.e AC not DC). Assuming the test was done with a 90% efficient power supply the load on it is only 600w. Also the link Tonester0011 posted above shows the x750 being able to do 1124w AC.

You can get a platinum rated Seasonic one for £200 (1000W).

If it's just for benchmarking though, it's a lot to pay out for power you won't need long term.

What games do you play now Andy that requires 3x7970?!
Also, if you dont mind, whats the rest of your spec? :)

Haha, I don't, hell the 2 7970's I have barely touch the surface. :)

It's kind of for future proofing, spend now and not later, that's my thinking anyway...

It was cheap on the MM and I have two lightings now so thought hell, why not...I told my wife a white lie and said it was for her PC...she'll never know :D

Spec here

If it really does make no difference, FPS etc wise then I may just put in the other PC. I wanted a 7970 for her PC so either way it doesn't matter to me. Seeing three 7970's in the case though would sure look good.

If you're on one screen I don't think much will be able to use all three, unless you're at 1600p or 120Hz. You'll see big results in benchmarks in games like Tomb Raider.

Sounds expensive! Electricity wise!

The £200 seasonic, will it have enough power for a third gpu? Or would I need to buy extra modular cables?
