Going to have to wait a while to be able to check if my main computer is still alive.

But I'm pretty sure the power supply is screwed.

The spray of sparks out the back, loud bang, dead fuse in the plug and tripping of the circuit breaker suggests nothing good.

Also a chunky resistor shaped thing behind a plastic shield behind the rear grille appears to have exploded violently, shattering the plastic shield and punching a small bit of it through the grille in a biscuit cutter fashion.

Probably the source of the black bitty things that came out with the sparks.

Was reminded of this video:
;)

On the other hand it's lasted 4 years since 2009.

On the other other hand it's got a 7 year guarantee

It has often made a moderate electrical "pop" when switched on to the mains but since it never seemed to affect performance I put it down to the switch inside being crude but functional.

They seemed to be closed til monday so nothing to do but sulk on my spare computer.

I dunno, stuff does happen and when it does you make more noise than while it was working.

Only the manufacturer and some retailers will know how bad something really is and they have no incentive to make it known.

Mainly a disappointment that it failed well within its warranty which should be a good guide as to how reliable something is.

Have to decide on waiting or buying one now :(

Had mine since 2009 as well and still going strong. Did think about replacing it when i went to Haswell but didn't bother in the end. Hopefully it's not taken anything else with it.

All PSU's have a chance of failure, being a premium model won't make it immune, just lower and less likely to kill the rest of the PC. Even the best components have a % rate of failure.

My old S12 Series 600W died with a loud pop and some smoke after 6.5 years of 24/7 use. I believe the fan died, but as it was so quiet in normal operation I didn't notice, it overheated and went bang. ^^

The chances are every high end PSU made at the same time will share a lot of the same basic components, as there are a very limited number of manufacturers of these premium parts.

Well, ticket was replied to within 1 working day as it said.

Off to the Netherlands to be prodded now ._.

Have no idea how many cables it came with, hope I have them all.

If you create an RMA online mate you can select Advanced RMA, so they'll put a hold on your credit card and ship a replacement first.

Edit: if you haven't sent it back yet phone them up and get it changed to Advanced, if you want that is :P

Agreed.

Glad to hear that it is being sorted out.

There is no need to send all the cables, the PSU itself is good enough to complete the process.
