Could Volcanic Islands based AMD with a 22nm SOI design featuring 2304 to 2560 stream processors be

Why does their power matter so much? As long as they can both play games at 60hz then who cares? If it meant the XB1 had to run at 30hz in some titles or slowdowns became apparent then yeah people can shout and scream all they want. I doubt MS would let this happen though.

It's going to be a struggle for me anyway as I've been used to playing on a 144hz monitor with high fps for nearly a year now. My XB1 is probably going to feel awful at first.

“I’m not dismissing raw performance. I’m stating–as I have stated from the beginning–that the performance delta between the two platforms is not as great as the raw numbers lead the average consumer to believe. There are things about our system architecture not fully understood, and there are things about theirs as well, that bring the two systems into balance.”

Interesting comments from Microsoft Senior Director - Albert Pennello. Not what I'm finding devs saying online though - hmmmmmm.

I'm so glad I didn't pre-order - think I'll wait for the reviews first then take the leap (If I can resist!!)

Not all of them, I believe John Carmack said that he couldn't believe how similar in performance both consoles were.

At the end of the day though, whether or not this rumour is true, whether or not the consoles are similar power wise or not, it's all irrelevant. It's what you do with that power that's important, and I think both systems will have some incredible games on them over the next few years.

Gaijin Entertainment has bluntly stated that the PS4 GPU is 40% more powerful than the one in Xbox One. We already knew this for a long time but Microsoft had never confirmed the console’s GPU specs. Currently the PS4 GPU runs at 1.84 teraflops compared to the 1.3 teraflops of Xbox One GPU.

Anton Yudintsev told Edge in an interview that “obviously PlayStation 4 is more powerful than Xbox One,” and gave some details on how much the difference is.

“It depends what you’re doing. GPU, like 40 per cent more powerful. DDR5 is basically 50 per cent more powerful than DDR3, but the memory write is bigger on Xbox One so it depends on what you’re doing.”

Microsoft recently increased the GPU clock by 6% so that definitely reduces the performance difference a bit.

Most multiplatform games next-gen will most likely look better on the PS4 due to the horsepower on offer, but Xbox One’s cloud architecture is said to provide 10 times the power of Xbox One if utilized properly.

Whilst I accept they may work out about the same hardware wise (no rash purchases till I see reviews lol!)- how's the cloud part of microsoft's claims going to work? - I doubt dev's working on multi-platform titles will utilise these cloud's if they require specific coding and kill a title for one console whilst making it favourable on another.....

OTT: Of course, however clearly a storm is coming to clean up all the over-budgeted crap off the market.

By this, I of course mean the companies that are far bigger than they really should be, this is a people business, not a patent one where you just buy things and you are suddenly invulnerable, some of these companies are not going to survive much longer, new consoles or not.

OT: I don't really get what this thread is implying, is it saying that Microsoft has space for a second GPU?

A good point I've seen recently is that kinect handles it's own processing whereas Sonys move camera uses system resources, so for motion enabled gaming at least, the Xbox is faster.

Kinect also uses the shape engines in the S.O.C, between that and the snap/TV features takes 10% power from the GPu.

*Update* ' New info reveals that the Wii U also has a Volcanic Island GPU hidden within it's SOC, due to be enabled by a firmware update when the PS4 and Xbox One go on sale in November' This will make the Wii U the fastest console with most giga floops.
