I was thinking of getting a Western Digital Black 2tb, but the Seagate 7200.14 (2tb) is faster, cooler, half the price, and from what I understand quieter?

It only comes with a 2yr warranty unlike the blacks 5yr warranty, but I have a SSD operating system disk and plan on doing regular full backups of everything to prepare for worse case scenario.

There seemed to be various issues with the Seagate at one problem requiring firmware updates (last year?) etc etc, but is that all a thing of the past? Can I just buy it and no firmware nonsense to worry about?

In short, any last words before I get the Seagate?

Thanks...

I think, if I’m honest you will be fine with both drives, I have read issues with Seagate drives clicking and subsequently failing but I know some people complain that the Blacks are too noisy for them.

For me it comes down to what you are storing on the drive, if it’s just steam for example then failure doesn’t really matter as you can just download your account again but if its precious files then make sure you do regular backups.

The longer warranty from WD always sets my mind at ease and is why I often opt for them.

I have a 1Tb Seagate and I've battered it with loads of game installs, hundreds of gigs of newsgroup downloads, dvd ripping and music downloads over the last year. Still going strong, quiet as a mouse.

I'm thinking about adding a 2Tb to a recent build but lots of review comments on the OC product page about noise do have me a bit concerned too. :/

My one of these failed to boot into windows last night, I bought it from the purple shirt store about 6 months ago.

I have yet to test it, last night I was trying to reinstall windows onto my backup hdd with the seagate still connected and it wouldn't go past the bios screen.

Not sure what that means? Now I've installed windows onto my backup hdd I will test the seagate soon to see if its had it.

*groan* - That's scared me :(

I've decided to order another of the 1Tb Seagate drives for my machine, I'm put off by the reported issues with the 2Tb versions enough to stick with what I know works ok.

Don't see why the 2tb ones would be any different to the 1tb or 3tb? Just more/less platters!?

Good sign so far. Just received it and for my given serial number (Z240SM5X) and model (ST2000DM001) there are no firmware updates at all (at Seagate).

I assume then this is a newly manufactured version with the latest firmware!

Any suggestions as to the best tool to test a hard drive/keep an eye on it? HD Tune (free)?

Don't worry about it?

Disks fail. OcUK IIRC have said in the past that the return rates of all current gen disks are largely similar.

I've had two WD Greens fail, does that mean they are ****? No.

Use it, backup regularly and don't worry about it...

Have you checked your serial number against the warranty yet ?

My ****ing Barracuda died 2 weeks after warranty....
And 3 of my mates that had Seagate drived ALL OF THEM packed up.
So: **** You seagate !!!

My 36gb WD raptor 8 years old used as system drive for 5 years. Still running NO PROBLEM.
So get Western Digital Black and you wont have problems. Nuff said !!!

Concorde Rules GREEN is cheap recycled **** Black got 5Years of warranty...

Well, I have it in an external eSata caddy at the moment, and I'd describe it as quiet.

I can hear is spinning, as I can with other 7200rpm drives, but no real noise at all. It's 1 foot away from me. The odd very little access click but that's it.

Through the eSata caddy using HD Tune:-
Min Transf. : 145.9MB/sec
Max Trans. : 178.1MB/sec

That's 50-70% quicker than my existing WD and Samsung drives which are plugged directly into the machine!

And also cost twice as much whilst consuming more power and making more noise

The bottom line is every type of drive from every manufacturer will, at some point, fail. There is absolutely zero proof that any one manufacturer is significantly worse than another.

You are of course however, welcome to your opinion.

After reading lots of negative comments about Seagate 2/3TB drives I decided to chance it anyway. Bought a 3TB (ST3000DM001), arrived today and instantly made me regret ignoring what I had read. It arrived faulty (beeping and not being detected by bios/windows) and is now being replaced by OCUK through RMA but I am worried about the replacement drive too now :(.

I know it is probably just bad luck but I kinda wish I'd gone for Western Digital and paid a bit more now.
