Speeding :(

In the same way that people see a camera and look down at their speedo (therefore making sure they're not navigating a dangerous bit of road safely) or stand on their brakes (therefore making an accident more likely), I suspect that people just drive around looking for cameras instead of where they are driving.

Instead of considering hazards such as other motorists, debris on road, potholes people are often distracted on hyper-alert for speedcameras. However the fact is, the range of them is so superior to your sight, that you'll be caught before you realise it, unless it was a SPECS.

Car manufacturers don't want to be seen to be helping people speed and not get caught. It's silly, as if the cameras are there for safety reasons, then knowing where they are is an alert to a dangerous place.

Maybe they just don't want to have to deal with updates, subscriptions, etc and who would be paying for it as an on-going service.

Seems weird that you can get exactly that from Garmin, Tom-tom, and every other sat-nav manufacturer.

You can add google navigation to that list as well, I find the navigation side spot on but after possibly being caught due to a large tractor and hay bale trailer hiding a camera I really want speed trap alerts back. (Only reason I was speeding was to get past the damn thing)

(Although now they have bought Waze I'm hoping they'll bring the alerts system over to maps)

Has anyone found a decent app on android for camera alerts that runs with google maps?

Drove the same route today. This is the stretch where they claim the offense happened:

Those 2 white dots ~400m in the distance are the NSL markers. To the right: sea wall. To the left: hedge. 'safety enforcement' my bottom - they are such parasites.

There are no speed camera signs though and I'm sure I would have noticed a bright yellow speed van down there. Is it possible for a community speedwatch group to issue a NIP? I'll hopefully get some evidence upon request as either way I'm curious where they were parked up.

Safety enforcement means your own safety too.

Is that a place where pedestrians might cross the road - the steps up from the sea wall?

Who gives a **** they're not going to suddenly appear from a vortex in the middle of the road and get run over.

If anything happened there it would more than likely be the fault of the pedestrian regardless of how fast the driver was going, as is the case most of the time a collision occurs on the road.

Despite blame, the force of the vehicle will injure/kill a pedestrian. Speed is *a* factor here, along with the mass of the vehicle.

Of course speed is a factor but we don't limit the speed of our trains to 30mph in case someone walks onto the track and gets hit.

I don't need a speed awareness course to highlight the correlation between speed and probability of a fatality but I'm sure in most collisions the pedestrian could have avoided the accident entirely if it took place on the road.

Lorry hits someone at 30 mph on a 60 road, do you think that person is likely to survive. I think speed should be considered but i think the size/weight of the vehicle is far more important-all chelsea tractors should be banned from the road:D

I fully support any raise in speed limits, but the facts are that there are many arguments against it... and far more support lowering the limits and increasing the frequency of cameras.

I'm just giving you the angles that the people behind cameras and council imposed speed limits come from.

Lowering speed limits may save lives. Cameras however are there to raise revenue and are in fact damn right dangerous.

When I see a camera I slow right down and then more often than not accelerate off afterwards. It does absolutely nothing to minimise the risk I pose to pedestrians except for in the 5-10 metre section with the white markings on the road. I've seen other drivers slam on the breaks because of cameras in wet/icy conditions, again, posing an enormous threat to pedestrians as their vehicle could slide off the road.

Nothing anyone says to me will persuade me that cameras are the answer to speeding and reducing fatalities, especially this applies to the fixed GATSO cameras. Even speed bumps are a vastly superior measure to prevent speeding.

If it's your first offence in 3 years you'll most likely get offered the driver awareness course at around £80 and a day of your time.

Sadly, convincing you or I isn't on the agenda for the politicians. It serves their purposes to join the hate campaigns and get more cameras on the roads. Just be smug in the knowledge that the people who complain about speed the most, are the ones who cameras end up tagging.

Nanny-state also comes into play as they are saying that people cannot be trusted to drive within the limits. Seeing as how I deliberately stick to limits below 60MPH, and the amount of times I am overtaken in 20 and 30MPH limits, I tend to agree that there are people out there who cannot be trusted.

Nothing annoys me more than seeing a bunch of kids in a clapped out Saxo bombing it down a high street but I would rather have people doing that and my own liberty to make decisions regarding my speed than a society where we are all forced against our will by technology to stay within the limits.

It's not really different to something really sinister such as preventing couples from having sex without seeking permission from the state just in case they are underage and thus breaking the age of consent or posing a risk of spreading STIs leading to potential fatalities and illnesses (saying technology enabled this in the future).
