*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

I must admit I was hoping for more. I've never owned an iphone but our house does have several Apple products - my MBP, my wifes iMac and my kids iPad Mini's. My wife recently got an iphone and I have to say I'm quite impressed with how fluid it is. Apple products do generally work quite well and just "feel right". Personally I'm an Android user but until recently it has always been a little "notchy" to use - never quite as smooth or polished as an ipad/iphone (the new Nexus 7 tablet changes that a lot - totally fluid with fantastic specs and sub-£200).

I'm not an Android fanboy at all and I don't regret the kids iPads for one moment - I wouldn't have bought them an Android device as I want them to have what their friends have and the help from Apple when something has gone wrong has been fantastic.

I am currently on the lookout for a new phone and the iphone just feels so nice in the hand. If the iphone could have taken a leap back in front then I it would definitely have been in consideration for me. But for now I think I'll stay on the other side of the fence. Such a shame as I do quite fancy an iphone. Maybe next time.

Not trying to say Android is better than the iPhone or even the iPhone is better than Android - each works well for different people - but it's not enough of an advance for me to consider one at this time.

Lmao people are sad enough to argue apple vs android, who cares a phones a phone who cared if it loads ur twitter 0.2 seconds faster. Must have a dull life it it bothers you that much.

What were you hoping for might I ask?

As with apple since they debuted the iPhone they have a major design revision every 2 years. This is the midpoint and was never going to have a change in design in the 5S.

Good to see Apple are still going to sell the trusty 4S, think I will hang onto mine until the iPhone 6 whenever that is released.

I can't be bothered with the debate around Apple v Android and it would honestly be nice to have a thread about a new Apple iPhone not derailed.

This.

It was the mid cycle release, never going to be a redesign, just updated and a couple of new features, as per.

I'm more excited about ios7 than I am pre ordering my iPhone 5S :), I can't wait to get it on my 5 and then get excited about how nippy it will feel on the 5S :).

95% of the people complaining have not used iOS7 as well. Its a great os and makes a big difference to the experience for me.

I'm very excited again, I'm less excited in the build up because I avoid the hype and press. When things get announced and are shown off I get excited :).

I love how the ios7 looks and I'm thinking moving away from my black iPhone 5 to a white 5S will look brilliant with the new ios7 with a nice blue case that Apple have announced, the features and improved specs make each up grade worth it for me, I resell each iPhone and it works out not spending 'that' much each year on the upgrade.

I love the fluid nature of the ios6/7 and the way it talks to all my other Apple devices :) I've never had a problem with Apple (besides a hardware problem, which was replaced within 24 hours) and I actually like the size of the screen and iPhone.

So the 5S will run on 64bit. Does this mean apps will be slightly larger? And if so, say what, 20%? If so, it might be worth me getting the 32GB this time as I'm pretty much on the limit with 16GB.

iOS will still be able to run 32-bit apps even if it's 64-bit, the beauty of the OS X kernel. No compatibility layer like on Windows ;)

I think the best feature is the flash, it adjust to white balance ! You can't even do that with a £460 Canon Speedlite 600 EX-RT and have to resort to clear plastic gels that you put in front of the flash.....

I have 3 of these Canon Speedlite lol

That is clever.

I think the main problem is that Apple have been seen to be lagging behind for quite a long time in the phone marketplace, they have been eclipsed in almost every single way and it's showing in both their market share and their stock value. Not only have they released an entirely uninspiring device that is barely in incremental improvement but failed to improve upon their pricing structure.

What both the public and shareholders were hoping for was something to get a head on steam up over - instead they have done the same thing that they've been doing for the last few years - just on a wholly less inspiring increment.

There's no arguing that it's a good device, it is. Just in light of so many other smart phone devices, and in light of a precedent set in the early days of wowing audiences, in light of waning share value and a swing in general opinion - they've entirely under-delivered. IMO

What would be "over" delivered in your opinion?

That's a tough one Raymond - I think that Apple is between a rock and a hard place because beyond doing something that knocks the game out of the park I think they've now got to swing a public and shareholder opinion. So much damage has been done through litigation and 'sitting on their laurels' with innovation (I know it's overused but I think it is justified) that they're now victims of their own success. I've said before that they created something far to close to perfection with iOS and the original UI that any changes for changes sakes would be a retrograde in user accessibility however they're also stuck because people like 'new' stuff. So what do they do, make it 'new' for the sakes of new and then live with all the hate for retrograding the user experience?

Delivering I think would be widening the scope of the OS UI - allowing for widgets and broader customisation. Accepting that people want a larger screen and a bit more cross platform interaction (at the risk of diluting the very thing that Jobs created with the Apple ecosystem and thus losing out on the corralled earning potential) and also an aesthetic shift - it didn't have to be huge but it needed to be more than a change in colour.

Overdelivering? I have no idea - but it would have to be pretty spectacular - it would have to be iPhone/iPad/Macbook Air all over again.

EDIT: I think they need to catch up significantly then build from a convincing platform rather than, excuse the term, rolling poop in glitter. (sorry a little harsh but it fits the analogy :p)
