*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

But.. but.. I need to watch Blu-Ray rips off a USB stick! iPad sux!!!!! :p

lol, one thing I do have reservation about is how well the fingerprint tech will be implemented and how deep.

I mean in the winter I will need to take my gloves off (although I still do with all touch screen devices anyway).
fingers need to be clean.
How fast does it work from placing the finger on it.
Will banking apps or other apps that make purchases start using it? (I hope so, I have so many different passwords !)

p.s. I am not worried about my fingerprint being "out there" even though this won't be. Mine is already out there when when I got my ID card in HK, in fact, I can get through customs & immigration there with my finger print scanner.

I have to agree with this.

Some asked whats so innovative about about bigger numbers with Samsung. In my opinion, a 5"+ 720p screen is innovative because it completely changed the experience of browsing the web from painful into a pleasure.

Browsing these forums on a Galaxy S2 4.3 inches (800x480) and then the Note II 5.5 inches (1280x720) was a massive massive difference. Most of the time i didn't even have to zoom in at all! I was almost a desktop experience. It's virtually impossible on an iphone comfortably without zooming round which wastes a heck of a lot of time and is just rubbish

I actually think browsing this forum is better on the iPhone 5 than on the S4, purely because of how good Safari is. The Samsung browser is clunky, as is Chrome to some extent. I'm quite comfortable doing it and don't feel the 1080p screen saves much time at all.

Anyway, Huddy has asked us to stop with this talk so we better listen or we'll be struck down. :p

I agree but when i want to do prolong web browsing on the go, I use the iPad (tablet).

To be fair my experience was with my gfs iPhone 4, so the iP5 aught to be a little better at least

Actually i always been a fan of Opera (not sure if it's available for the iPhone, i recommend it if it is) as it's as close to a desktop experience as possible and feels very intuitive. You don't have to stick to stock apps on any platform :)

My 90+ year old illiterate grandmother can use an iPad to facetime. I like to see her try an android tablet !
Skype?
Two clicks and your calling :p

Seriously though, I am tempted by the new iPhone.

Although I have a Nexus 4 that has been hacked to the hilt so its already blazing fast and does everything I need...
I still pick up and use my sisters iPhone 5 all the time!

The shape of it and the way it feels is superb and although I haven't tried iOS7 I like the look of it and some of the features.

The Mobiles section is for all intents and purposes an Android forum. 95% of the threads are about Android and anyone who asks what phone to buy get recommended an Android device.

I don't know what it is but Android users but a vocal section seem to have the urge to constantly defend their choice of OS and poo-poo the alternatives. I made the mistake of suggesting that the iPad was still the best tablet and got a torrent of abuse.

i disagree. never seen a vocal section that is like that.

Also, the ipad is the best 10 inch tablet only because apple have more tablet friendly apps.

i use an ipad 3 for example.

see i am not biased or a fanboy of any tech. Being a fanboy is darn right stupid whether you are a apple or android or blackberry fanboy. It is all pointless and childish.

Just get the best tool for the job regardless if its made by apple or fisher price.

Not sure thats true.

Take NFC for example, Samsung add it and people say wow then realise there is actually very little to do with it. Apple choose not to add it and people moan but I suspect when apple do add it it will be at the point where the market is truly ready and it's nt just an empty feature but one that can be used.

Take widgets and other UI tweaks, Samsung and HTCadd thousands of such things the majority of which are not used. Samsung take this to the extreme and bloat the android OS so far that it runs like a dog even on very high spec hardware. If apple ever go down the widgets route I expect them to have a well thought out strategy and widgets etc people actually use.

It's two ways to crack the same nut Samsung and HTC throw the kitchen sink at a great paper spec sheet, Apple go for lesser spec but greater usability.

For me the only company really doing anything different at the moment is Sony but nobody has noticed!

The world is bigger than the UK

I noticed people using their mobile phones in Korea to pay for groceries and using the metro.

No doubt will be making money again - will pre order 2 if the prices are £29 per month, will get 2-3 units @ the £29 a month cost, no upfront fee. Gotta love Orange.

It does annoy me when websites aren't optimised for mobile devices. I've always been in the camp of websites should evolve to cater for new devices, rather than the hardware catering to what, in some cases, is 10 year old software (like this forum). I don't use my phone how I use my computer so I shouldn't expect to access online services in the same manner.

there's playing embedded youtube videos without having to lunch another app

Embedded YouTube videos don't launch in a separate app from Safari.

The 5C as entry for "emerging markets" seems like an idiotic move. I can't see £470 plastic phone selling in Europe let alone in China. It would make more sense to leave 4S as "value" option for under £350 than 5C at that price.

I think this time around Apple is digging hole to Silicon Graphics universe again. No software for video professionals, Final Cut 7 no longer on sale, no Mac Pro that would work with existing equipment for over a year, new Mac Pro needs disposing of almost every piece of hardware you accumulated in edit suite or studio for years, now crazy shift in phones when the world is going for branded £200-300 smart phones. Very strange, very strange.

Have fun finger scanning this winter peeps, but I think I'm going to sit this one out. There is nothing missing in my 4S that 5S has and I would feel the need to fork out macbook money on.

Actually i hate it when they are optimised! I've never experienced a website that's been optimised for mobile devices that didn't feel cut down and restrictive apart from Barclaycard (so credit to them). The hardware has caught up anyway so it's not really needed to optimise websites these days anyway

So nothing new to see then bit faster, fancy finger scanner, plastic colors if your not feeling as flush, more expensive anyway. Remind me why people queue up all night just to get one of these?

Why is it separate at all?, when do the other manufacturers get their own sections?

Because Apple isn't specific to mobiles or smart phones. Strictly speaking, the Apple hardware forum should be just about Apple Macs, but the forums were setup long before smart phones so it's just the way it's evolved. I will bring this matter up.

I still prefer native apps. Just look at Facebook, the only thing I've noticed that the mobile app is lacking is being able to directly reply to other comments. Everything else, works brilliantly, and just goes to show how optimising something for a specific screen size results in a much better user experience.

It isn't for emerging markets, it's trying to appeal to a broader, younger demographic.

When you look at the cost of the 5C and the materials being used this could be a higher margin device for Apple than the 5S...

I've never owned an iPhone (have iPads/iPods) but I have to say the geek in me did a little cheer when they announced 64-bit.

NFC is bigger in the east.

With Apple being an American company, and a large portion of their sales coming from the US/EU, NFC is something they simply will not bother with until the infrastructure and demand for NFC is high in these markets and it's all in place. Including something for a service that's barely out of the womb in this part of the world is putting the cart before the horse. Someone said companies are waiting on Apple... well...

What they're doing with Touch ID is planting a seed - you can use your fingerprint to unlock your phone and use as verification for iTunes purchases. Innocent enough, but... "the iPhone 5S is our most forward thinking iPhone yet" - I think was the quote - what Apple have done, IMO, is tackle a security issue (because people will, for better or worse think that Touch ID is all super secure) that paves the way for them to enter the NFC market in the future with their own verification system. I bet in a few years you'll be able to use Touch ID in and at all sorts of sites and places.

It's an alternative, not a cheap model, the cheap thing was just a rumour. Obviously it hasn't panned out. :p

Certainly seems so, i thought the 'C' stood for cheap:p:D. Anyhow ill wait for them to come into the local apple store near where i live and go have a look. I like the fingerprint scanner option on the iphone 5s though, seems pretty neat.

Ill take my mum as well so she can have a look and see which one she prefers and if i can get one instore then ill buy her one although im loathed to spend that much money on something that really isnt revolutionary hardware or software wise. But for her, the iphone is a perfect fit so no point in getting her an Android or even one of the new Blackberries as she wouldnt get on with them.
