*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Its not. The best way is download mda firmware full version stock from samsung-firmware flash that in Odin. Format the sd card and start from scratch. Im not sure how you went wrong but dont use kies. You really dont want MH8 and thats all it will do. Download the latest (MH8) and flash it

What's wrong with MH8, can't I flash that then just download a small firmware file and replace MH8? I can't download and download the internet is so slow it'll take me days to get a couple of 1.6gb files.

I tried flashing I9505XXUBMF8-PRE-ROOTED-ODEX-FULL and that's where it failed during it and came up with firmware error.

MH8 straight from Samsung will include the locked bootloader and all other sorts of locked down security crap you don't want and you can't downgrade from it once it's on there.

That what I need? I just get the feeling this will fail through Odin too if other ROMS did.

I'm not surprised you're having problems. First off that rom was pulled, it has the no going back Knox bootloader. And why flash an Odin rom after going to all the effort of installing a custom recovery?

Start from scratch, you need a stock firmware MGA is the one to use. It maybe now you've half flashed that you can only use MH8 from now on. You'll have to see, but persevere with MGA because you want to avoid MH8 if at all possible. The stock rom will overwrite everything, all you need is download mode and a working Odin. If it fails then you have other issues.

If you get it going:

  • Clean working stock rom, all factory reset and data/caches wiped. Formatted internal SD card. 9GB showing free.
  • First thing always. Flash cwm and do a nandroid backup. (copy clockworkmod folder to a PC while you're at it)
  • Then copy over cwm flashable rom and run the zip, that's it.

Is that the right download? NEE is Finland??

If I install the MGA, do I only need to from there one use CF AUTO ROOT, Install CWM and flash ARHD3.0?

I guess my phone is screwed for today? The internet is so crap here I'm going to have to wait till tomoz to go use some WiFi in the city centre, I'm going to try flashing recovery again and see if I get anywhere.

Yeah it'll work it'll have a UK CSC. I listed the sequence above, you don't need a root to install custom firmware.

Flash CWM back on is a good start. There's some questions you still need to know, why did you think it had no room and what was the firmware it was on. It occurs to me it may have been on MH8 already, did you accept an OTA recently? A lack of SD space can happen, system folder just gets fuller with each bad flash. To fix then format /system in CWM to and flash stock to correct.

It really helps if you take the time to read and understand everything before you start, as devices go this is pretty straight forward.

here's another, BTU (UK csc) > https://hotfile.com/dl/240394524/4d4fe93/I9505XXUBMGA_I9505OXXBMH1_BTU.zip.html

Well there is some grey font that says "WRITE PROTECTION: ENABLE"

If I am already on MH8 What am I going to have to do?

**EDIT**

Oh dear, just looked at clockwork backup, I am already on MH8.

I've got recovery back on, PhillZ this time, gonna try using the backup.

Don't worry about the write enable, mine says that, never stopped me.

Ah, that would explain a lot. How did you get on that?

If there's a backup then restore it. You can't mix backups from different custom recoveries.

---------

Otherwise you'll need the official MH8 firmware > https://hotfile.com/dl/243289856/5f90db9/I9505XXUDMH8_I9505OXXDMHA_BTU.zip.html

Flash that and factory reset and format SD.

You can still flash CWM (do a backup) and there's a root for MH8 and then you can disable knox pop ups.
After that you'll have to make sure the firmware you flash to is based on MH8 or uses a custom kernel or it'll just stop at the splash screen

So cause ARHD 3.0 is based on MGA I can't use it? Or can I put a different kernel on?

Bit of both, the problem is it's on the stock kernel. If he built it on say the Adam kernel the MGA build would be ok. But as it's MGA it won't boot, so look for MH8 builds or builds with custom kernels.

I suppose you could flash the rom and then flash the kernel (i.e no reboot). Sort of thing I'd try for a laugh.

So if it's custom kernel I can assume it'll work on MH8?

Probs with flashing ARHD3 was, everytime I tried to flash it, the phone just turns off totally when the process started, not sure why that'd happen.

I'm going to say yes, umm probably. Only thing you might find is a mis-match of the baseband/build and wifi issues. I've no idea if you can flash an older modem with a MH8 bootloader, I'm betting not.

As I understand it Odin won't work with non MH8 roms if you have the MH8 bootloader, so CWM is all you have. And it stopped because the bootloader detected the older stock kernel. Oh and the new bootloader does not effect aosp roms.

So I can go download this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2424442 Get the MGC Kernel and then it should work fine?

Can't I get a stock base for MGA or something, just flash that now via Odin and then whack ARHD on?

And lets just summarise:

The reason I was running into so much trouble is because I was not thinking about base versions, so I was trying a ROM that was for a totally different base and that's it?

It's on MH8 AND has the KT Kernel, it fine on both points. It won't need anything.

I don't think you've quite got your head around this yet. MGA is a firmware revision, all custom firmwares are based on stock something. That's its base, they update the custom firmware e.g omega 9 to 10 goes from a base of MGA to MH1 for instance. And no you can't do as much now as you have a locked bootloader, at some point in the last few days you updated the phone and limited your options. Before you could flash any version, now you're limited to MH8 builds or builds with a custom Kernel. My advice stick to the MH8 builds to avoid more of this.

No not really. Normally you can flash any firmware version or 'base' you like. Then Samsung went and spoilt it and made it so you can only use an authorised kernel (or one that doesn't report back, i.e custom built) with the new locked bootloader.

It'll be interesting if its the same going forward. Will the bootloader have to match the kernel or was this a one off security measure. Also I'm hoping that Odin doesn't check the binary counter or KNOX Warranty status and just abort the flash for future updates. Then you're really stuck. It's a pita I know that much.

Guess you'll find out. Flash CWM, get it all wiped, reset, format SD. Make sure it all works. Back it up, put a copy on your PC and off you go. MH8 stuff should be straight forward, just for laughs you should be able to any use cyanogenmod, google-edition, aosp based as well :)

Just goes to show what progress the dev's have made in stripping out all the Samsung bloatware and refining the rom.
