Hi Chaps,

Quick question, would my system yeild much performance increase from:

i7 920@ 3.6Ghz /12GB Ram/ 7970 OC

To a haswell/ivybridge-e chipset/cpu? I use my system for gaming on 1 screen.

Thanks.

A little. It wouldn't be earth shattering depending on the game.

It is time for an upgrade though, and many newer games are wanting high frequency clocks with multiple thread support.

I think that is the fairest way to describe it.

Unless your on a 120hz screen or wanting to stress dual gpus it is a handful of games that you might see noticeable improvement.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. I may wait until the launch of the xbox one/ps4 as that may be a driver for multi core support/optimisation

Id agree with lnoton here, i currently have the spec in sig and an i7 930 @4ghz, (also owned a 3570k and a 3770k). In games i play with one high end gpu there was no discernible difference with any of theese chips. It was only by moving to sli that i noticed a difference, the 930 was a slight bottleneck moreso the 3570k in multi threaded games. Id suggest clocking the 920 a bit more if you have a capable cooler. Which gpu are you using btw?

7970oc, as mentioned in the original post :P.

I have an old c0 stepping, and the requires a lot more juice to clock even further, so I'm going to keep it how it is.

Ahh sorry, missed that.

Iirc, most CO steppings would top out at 3.8ghz. However even at 3.6ghz i cant see the cpu holding back the card.

my 920 is at 4.2 and I had a pair of twin fozr 7950s at 1150/1600 a while back and it was running at 80% + usage for Crysis 3. Noticed 95c as well till I sorted the cooling for those 'exhaust into my case' cards ... never crashed mind!

Will see how it copes with a 7970+7990 soon and if obviously an issue there'll be an upgrade but I want to assess the impact first .... will throw a few benches up on the charts when the 7990 gets here to see how it fares.

I wouldn't imagine a 920 would be too much of a bottleneck for a single 7970, if you had two then it might be worth it then but otherwise I'd say you may as well hold out.

I went from a 920 @ 3.8GHz to a 3770k @ 4.4GHz, and it's a bit difficult to judge for me. I didn't really feel any massive difference, but I also upgraded from a 6950 to 2x670s which felt like it gave me a huge boost.

I'd probably recommend waiting if you can. I feel like I upgraded for pretty much a 'new toys' moment rather than actually needing to.

I went from a i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz to a 4770k which I currently have clocked at 4.2GHz with the intention to go to 4.5GHz. In terms of actual performance increase it's nice to have Sata III and USB 3.0 but that's about it. Games feel smoother with the 4770K but that's because it's paired with 2 7950s whereas the 920 had a single 7850. If you can do a cheapish upgrade it's worth doing for the newer technologies but if it will cost you a fortune I'd not bother.

I upgraded from an i7 860 @3.2 and the difference hasn't been that great. However, I got an SSD and now i'm on SATA 3 it's fantastic so good decision to order the PCI-E sata III card!

Same, mine still working at 4.2GHz quite happily, never had any performance issues with it.

If I was to upgrade it would be the USB 3 and SATA 3, but there are adapters for that so even that's not necessary

Here's my before/after with a SATA 3 PCI-Express card

Mmmm, an expansion card for USB3/sata3 will make a difference then, will look into that.

As to the graphics benchmarks my scores are a bit behind the latest but gaming itself is fine - eg, Crysis 3 on 1600p is a steady & smooth 50+ fps on max quality (with MSAAx4) with 7990+7970 ... cpu usage in the 90% range at times but still life left in it yet.

Agreed, it's a damn crime that as enthusiasts that their's nothing worth upgrading to!! I LOVE all the latest **** but can't seem to justify it/not worth switching :( Shame on AMD for not providing any competition in this regard!!!

I guess I'll have to slap the money towards gfx cards :D

Thats pretty much the stance that I am taking and not upgrading from my 1366 setup. There just seems to be very little gain from what the newer tech to justify upgrading. Of course newer ivy/haswell will have sata 3 and usb 3 and pci-e3 etc but tbh it's not a deal breaker for me at all. I think the next upgrade for me would be newer gpu's and thats it.
