I think when you will get a 5S from pre-ordering online is the big unknown at the moment. If you look at the 5C pre-orders it says:
Delivers 20/9 in most areas
That would imply that there will be stock in the UK sent out from a distribution centre and unless you live in the sticks, its likely you will get it on the day.
With the 5S, I would imagine they will do something similar and have a certain amount of stock ready. At least you would hope so and its not going to be a case of ordering on the Friday launch and then it shipping from China and not arriving until the end of the week. Though that could still more than likely happen anyway because when the pre-orders launch, the Apple website tends to fall to pieces and if your order doesn't get through quickly enough, you are so far down the queue you are left waiting for more stock to be built.
Friday... though I'm sure its likely to be a slow shuffle in from a queue, rather than walking straight in.

Sorry if it's been mentioned already but when in theory will I be able to walk into my local Vodafone and try to upgrade to a 5S?
