*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

What's your point, I was on a £13 a month contract for the s3 and s4 after release on 18 month contracts and all iphones I get 40-60% of through orange. That's a win win now isn't it.

You need to read some of the earlier posts. Many thought 'for some reason' the contract I was on didn't exist.

but yeah, that's a cracking deal, just be careful you don't get flamed by a few of the forum members :p

Still undecided as to whether to keep my giffgaff and buy the phone outright or get it on vodafone contract. Works out a little cheaper over my 2 year cycle to get it on vodafone as I can get a 20% discount on their contracts but I reckon it will take a while to get stock from them and I have a suspicion that the handset price will be quite high unless I take a ridiculous contract out.

And it is indeed fast: the scanner was able to pick up all of our fingers in fractions of a second and from any angle. It's so natural, in fact, that we almost forgot that passwords and unlock screens even existed on the 5s; on countless occasions we tried to unlock the iPhone 5 and 5c with the scanner before realizing that we had to use the "old-fashioned" slide-to-unlock method. It's not perfect, however: the scanner didn't work when our fingers were wet or only partially on the home button, although we didn't experience any problems with clammy fingers in humid conditions. (Update: fun fact -- it also technically works with toes, though we're not sure why you would want to do that.)

LOL :D

and

chopping off someone's fingers won't work, either; sorry, enterprising thieves, the sensor can only pick up living tissue.

 So you can't fake it with a Jelly baby it seems !

Three seem to be very expensive this time round. I worked out it's cheaper to buy unlocked direct from Apple rather than go contract if you want the One Plan. I can only compare 5C prices at the moment:

Unlocked: £469 + (£15/m x 24) = £829 TCO

Contract: £49 + (£41/m x 24) = £1,033 TCO

Contract (+ Mazuma promotion): £49 + (£41/m x 24) - £50 = £983 TCO

With a lot of other phones there's often a benefit in spreading the cost over 24 months as in many cases it'll work out at a similar price to buying the phone outright plus 24 month on a SIM only (I.e. a network subsidy on the phone). Bizarrely iPhone deals all seem to work out much more expensive than just paying upfront for the phone and going SIM only. I have to laugh when I see some plans at 60 quid a month or greater before the phone is free.

Is this just because Apple have them all stitched up like a kipper, or are the networks taking advantage of Apple + 4G to ramp up their customer's expectations on what they're required to pay?

I think it's a case of Apple having the retail outlets and networks under their thumb. They don't like their phones being subsidised heavily. Not to say the networks aren't trying to make a profit either.

Also Three dropped the price of The One Plan on Sim Only from £25/m to £15/m which makes a big difference to the figures.

Anandtech barely gave the Galaxy S4 half a preview, they're only interested in hits when it comes to mobile reviews.

Basically they are biased, that said from benchmarks I've seen the iPhone 5s performs really well.

I don't think they are biased, they seem pretty good when it comes to Android phones too, the HTC One review was very good.

The GS4 is the most popular Android phone - if they're soo interested in hits it would have had a 20 page review.

Biased my ass - Brian Klug is well into Android.

Do you pull this stuff out of thin air?

Can you tether on the Three £15/month PAYG does anyone know?

Also, all the apps that are getting updated for iOS7 look much better than before almost to a man. The new interface seems to be leading to a much more coherent design across the platform.

So why didn't the Galaxy S4 get a full review? They're had long enough to put a full review together, clearly they don't think it's popular enough with their readers.

The HTC One get a full review yet the iPhone's largest competitor's flagship device gets half a review or a mini review.

If they did that with with nvidia/amd you would think something was a bit off wouldn't you? but when it comes to smartphones it's accepted.

I'll pass on Anandtech when it comes to smartphone and tablet reviews.

Because you implied it was a 12 month contract which would have made it an outrageous total contract cost...

They've got loads of articles on the S4 to be fair, not just the main review.

They probably didn't do a longer review for a few reasons but I think the two biggest are that 1)there's about a million variations of the S4 and 2)I think the reviewer Brian Klug preferred the HTC One.
