Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum vs GTX 680

Hi great people of OCUK

I dont know what happened to my old account? but anyways, time for upgrading my GPU before the arrival of BF4.

I currently have a mildly overclocked GTX 480 which i've put up for sale on ebay

It runs every game but i like to run games at nearly max settings and need min 60fps , so im looking for a new gpu.

The choices for my budget are quite limited. they Asus GTX 680 dicrect CU2 @ £270 and Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum @ £270.

my gut feeling is always to go for nVidia cards but i have this theory in my head, which could very well be false, that since both next gen consoles have AMD based gpu/cpus, the next gen games are going to run better on an AMD card rather than Nvidia's.

The speed between the cards are very very close. i'd say the same. but the nVidia card runs cooler, quieter and uses less power.

Would really appreciate your input. specially from those with experience with either card.

NOTE: one thing i just remembered, my psu does not have any 8 pin pci-e connectors. it has 1 or 2 6-pin pci-es connectors only. would this be an issue?

EDIT
=========================================================
It has come to my attention that my psu will probably not be able to handle the matrix plat because it has no 8 pin connectors. so i have a new option, the standard GE of the 7970. is it much worse than the platinum?

Don't think the mods will be liking your ref to your auction site sale mate, I would take it down and edit it.

From what I have seen the 7970 matrix card is a very fast card, Though how it compares directly to it's gtx680 counterpart I don't know. My gripe with these cards is how much space they take up and can imagine them being quite heavy too, Personally I would go with the gtx 680 if nv is your preference. I have just oredered a gtx 680 pe ( binned lightning chips) and hope to flash the bios to the lightning, I think they are a better looking card. They had them for special at £251.99 yesterday but have since gone upto £279.99, Still def worth a look.

I also don't think you will get that kind of money for your gtx 480 imho, I just sold a gtx580 phantom 3gb for less than that and I was happy with the price I got, You never know though.

I took the link down. the price i put is very comparable and i bought a 6970 for my work pc not long ago for about the same price.

the only thing that bothers me with the 680 is the 256-bit memory. always had 384 bit since my 8800 gtx.

also the size and weight dont bother me, i have a huge case and my mobo is tough enough to handle it

this is where you may have some problems, most higher end cards are 6+8 or 8+8 connections.

could be fixed with power adapter/connectors, but I don't know any who run their cards from molex to gpu..

If that psu has run your gtx 480, I can't see it being a problem on the two cards you have mentioned already. I would however echo the concerns of others and stick to dedicated pcie 8 pin connectors where ever possible.

of course that would be ideal but i really cant afford to get a good psu and gpu at the moment. also been investigating the issue, apparantly a 6 pin to 8 pin connector should solve the issue. specially since the 680 draws around 100 watts less than the 480.

This is a very good price at the moment and with 4096 mb would always be a welcome boost for anything higher than 1080p http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-290-AS also what cpu are you running, As this might be a bottleneck with the cards you are looking at. That 670 I linked to would easily clock upto 680 speeds as well.

It is a good bang to buck and would give you extra money to look at a new psu.

Edit: just found this thread on the 2gb version of that card http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18534051

if im honest i dont really want to overclock my gpu mainly because i dont want to void the warranty. the 680 would suffice with its out of the box clock. i did look at the 670 top but that was too expensive.

thanks for the links i will have a look. im running ivy bridge 3770k @ 4.8 ghz

A stock 7970 GE easily beats a 680. The Matrix overclocked leaves no comparison. Anandtech's benchmarks with 7xxx cards are always inaccurate.

+1

The matrix platinums are very fast and overclock well and will beat a GTX 680 in most things.
