Hi all, after selling my HD7950, Im looking to switch to Nvidia and have been eyeing up the GTX670s. Now the question is, do I go for the 2gb or 4gb version?

I game at 1440p so it makes sense going for the 4gb but after reading some reviews it doesnt seem to make much difference in my resolutions, well not as much as others have made it out.

In most scenarios, the reference 2gb version even out performs the Direct CUII 4GB?

Here is the SLI review in 3D Surround setup and again, 4GB VRAM doesnt make much difference?

Here's another sample where it shows minimal difference between 2gb and 4GB

Am I missing something or is there really not much difference between 2gb and 4gb at 1440p?
With my HD7950, playing skyrim with everything maxed out and visual/texture mods installed, I witnessed VRAM usage go up as far as 2.6GB but after turning down AA to 2x/4x, VRAM usage went down to 1.5GB?
The same thing with battlefield 3, turning down AA reduced VRAM usage by about 500MB.

I will more than likely go with a SLI setup and will last me till I finished university(4 years). So, is "You need more than 2GB VRAM" just a marketing tactic?
Sorry if this has been asked before but I just want some clarification.

You're essentially downgrading from a 7950 to a 670...

At 1440p the 384bit bus of the 7950 comes in handy. You'll see in benchmarks that the higher the resolution, the wider the gap in performance between the 7950 and 670.

Since the 4GB 670 is something like £8 more, it makes little sense to get the 2GB one.

Well you would be mad not to buy the 4Gb Asus right now as the price difference is only £8  from the 2Gb and therefore renders any argument over which one to get pointless. There may be situations in the future where the extra vram will matter. Get the 4gb. :)

Edit: Damn you Teppic beat me to it. :p Agree he should have stayed with the 7950, crossfired will be hard to beat. :)

It's like going to the cinema and asking for a regular box of popcorn. You may just as well buy the extra large when the prices are almost identical, even if you do need it.

More popcorn is always better.

Is the 2gb is enough argument so ingrained that him saying "With my HD7950, playing skyrim with everything maxed out and visual/texture mods installed, I witnessed VRAM usage go up as far as 2.6GB" doesn't even register any more?

Actually it's been proven on this forum a few times that The 4GB 670's don't clock as well as the 2GB ones, and by the time you would need >2GB VRAM the GPU has already run out of grunt so you have to drop setting (and don't need >2GB).

For £8 difference - I know what I'd buy

Apologies there I did miss that, Modded Skyrim is pretty much the only game that can run out of memory on current GPU's without running out of grunt, though having said that it can do it on 3GB and 4GB cards too, I have seen a few people move to 6GB 7970's due to their Skyrim modding addiction.

Well if I was the OP and just wanted the card for Skyrim I would go for the 4GB one too, however if I wanted it for anything else I would save the £8 and take the faster card ;)

At 1440p I would bet both of LtMatt's 7950s that BF4 will want 3GB :)

I'm in a win win situation now. If im right i get to keep my current cards. If im wrong i get a free upgrade to three titans.

OK, better to get the 4GB then since I wont be upgrading for 4 years!
