Is the GTX 780 overkill for a 1920x1080 resolution?

Tomb Raider @1080p maxed on a single GPU, it is not that much of a sweat

Having said that there is never a problem with having too much GPU grunt but too little is a real pain.

Some of us like to stay above 60 fps :p. I love my 780 but won't hesitate to upgrade it when maxwell comes out :D

Here is M2033 LL benchmark, the specs it's run with are in my sig. This damn is DEMANDING!
Options: Resolution: 1920 x 1080; DirectX: DirectX 11; Quality: Very High; Texture filtering: AF 16X; Advanced PhysX: Enabled; Tesselation: Not supported; Motion Blur: Low; SSAA: ON;

Average Framerate: 41.00
Max. Framerate: 120.85 (Nvidia vsync on, would have been higher)
Min. Framerate: 16.21

I just got my 780 Classified, I was going to watercool it but I think I'll wait for Maxwell and water-cool that instead :P

Games are only gonna get more graphicly demanding with the next gen consoles, I mean crysis 3 and metro last light will not hold a steady 60 FPS at 1080p when maxed out.

If the next gen consoles are going to be the equivalent of the HD7850/70 they shouldn't really affect PC gaming, the two games you mentioned are available on console but they are toned down compared to the PC version. I am not saying games are not going to get more demanding as time progresses as that would be silly, just pointing out that the consoles won't influence it (baring god awful console ports like Halo or GTA 4).

They may not be GTX 780s at all, but the benchmark is genuine with tress fx enabled and 1080p maxed.::p:D

Do share, what rig was that bench done on?

With my ref 780 overclocked I can keep above 60fps, just, I yearn for a single GPU solution that handles Lara's Maine with ease :D:p

We'll then, I rest my case - a 780 is never overkill @ 1080p if you like max eye candy!!:p

You can never have overkill with GPUs, even if you find a game with huge max fps it is no big deal to disable sli to deal with it.

At the other end of the scale Crysis 3 maxed @1600p looks nice with an average 85fps and mins of 60fps.

I'm tempted to buy a second 780 for my 1200p IPS monitor (I need colour accuracy for work), but I recon I'd kick myself when the 880 gets released!

Love the just wait comments, may as well never buy anything because you know, may as well wait for that next best thing months down the line.

I agree that overkill is possible on some titles at some resolutions but WHY NOT?

We are PC gaming enthusiasts, we exist for greater fidelity, resolutions and fluidity compared to console offerings.

So if you can afford it go for it, a title will come along eventually that will soak up that extra power then eventually you will need to upgrade.

This threads beefed up since I've been offline, some interesting stuff on here thanks guys, Gone for the plunge and ordered a 780, it was the last one, so I'll have to wait till there in stock again to go SLI :D
