Does anyone have any little tips they use to cope with anxiety? I'm not talking medicinal or anything like that, just something to help bring stress levels down a little bit.

I don't cope well with anxiety, I take some mild anti-anxiety meds now and generally I do OK but I'm normally at a higher starting point of stress so little things can heighten my anxiety levels dramatically.

I'm finishing my current job next week and starting a new one the week after, it's a really good job that I thought was way out of my league and I'm beginning to get really tense about it, that and the thought of leaving my current one for some reason.

In the past when I've felt this anxious this far ahead of something the situation has spiralled and I've gone off food and sleep. That hasn't happened in a couple of years though and since then I've had it under control apart from the odd wobble.

For a few years now I've relied on a couple of things that act as safety blankets more than anything, I have a couple of valium stashed, I always carry chewing gum (as I get nauseous and that helps) and I have this homoeopathic stuff called Avena Sativa that I know is technically useless but placebo effect or whatever it is helps me.

But all these things seem to be lessening in their influence recently so I was wondering whether any of you have any tricks or whatever you use to convince yourself you're alright when things get a bit turbo?

Like I said not talking medical stuff, just like always carrying gum and whatnot.

Valium ? That stuff messed my uncle up I think as its addictive and came off it too fast. This was many many many years ago. Do they still prescribe that?

Cut out all caffeine if you can. Other than that, mind over matter. There isn't a magic cure I've learnt. Never gone the med route.

I'll give you the advice i never take (i get anxious a lot, had the odd panic attack years ago) ...... exercise! Go for a run or something.

Feeling better about yourself health wise distracts away from upcoming nervous situations.

Speaking as someone that has been to the bottom of the rabbit hole and still continues to battle it on a daily basis, yes I have a tip for you keep fighting it and if a situation arises that sends you into a fight or flight reaction try and confront it or you will regress, which believe me you don't want to do.

Ask yourself, what does being anxious or worrying about something achieve?

Can you do something about it? If yes, then do it, if no... then stop caring :)

Live life for the here and now, don't worry about the future.

The will smith quote from After Earth sums it up well.

"Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice."

The same applies to anxiety.

Do you have anxiety?

What kindai said doesn't really cater for someone with anxiety (I would know) as life isn't as black and white as his suggestions are portraying.

I can write you a long essay saying how I`ve struggled with the issue, bottom line is that it hasnt gone away or got better, I just keep hammering at it and not letting it get in way of my life, simpler said than done... I know. You get used to the feeling. Although I would not say my anxiety levels are ridicolously high but I have been tempted with medication, didnt go for it... Didnt want to admit that I lost.

Diazepam is still commonly prescribed yes, it's popular because of it's very high effectiveness, immediate onset of action and lack of side effects. I've been using it here and there for years to remarkable effect.

Unfortunately this thread will no doubt be closed soon because the clueless mods on this forum don't understand the concept of "medical advice" and close every thread where people talk about their personal experiences of medical treatment or even just discuss biology as it relates to disease.

Morning guys, thanks for the replies. I think getting rid of caffeine and doing a bit of exercise are steps 1 and 2.

I'd been casually ignoring the fact that my caffeine intake had been on the up again recently, one in the morning, another at 11, Starbucks at 1 and then sometimes another again around 4.

Sitting here with tea this morning now.

Also I was playing tennis quite regularly until my friend I played with moved back to Spain and I haven't been since, might ask my flatmate.

I've also been smoking gradually more, must be over 10 a day now. In my current job the work had been winding down (before I got the new one) so I was just taking more and more smoke breaks to pass the time.

I just feel a little out of my depth with this new job, a recruiter blagged me an interview because I needed a journo degree and 3 years experience, neither of which I have and then I just went in and absolutely killed the interview, easily the best one I've ever had.

It was supposed to be a 2 stage interview process and I went in as one of the last in the first stages, they cancelled all their other second stage people and offered me the gig the next day.

I was proper chuffed with that and was bragging about it loads but now it just seems like I got all this caught up in a whirlwind and looked really good, just setting them up to be disappointed.

Im exacly the same. I take meds etc etc but i have found fitness and keeping busy helps me forget about it.

I went through a stage of drinking to make me forget about it. But it was still there the next morning.

Its all aboutbself asteam at the end of the day. If you feel posative and look forward to life then that keeps it under control.
