Capital One Cup - Second Round 24/25 September *** Spoilers ***

I'm not sure what to say other than Gerrard has been playing as a deep lying playmaker for most of the last year. When he plays alongside Lucas he will still on occasion venture forward or, like today, when we're chasing a game but on the whole he's sitting deep.

There are still people that call for him to play further forward more often but I agree with what you're saying, he doesn't have the explosiveness to do that anymore.

If you look back to a lot to the times we beat your lot under Benitez. Our success was usually centred around Gerrard, Alonso & Masch over running the likes of Carrick, Scholes and Giggs in your midfield. It would be harsh to blame Carrick (for example) in those instances because it's not his game and he needs a more physical presence alongside him.

We're going to continue to get exposed in midfield, when we're not retaining the ball well in attack, until we sign a powerful defensive midfielder and it's worrying that we've not been linked with one since Masch left.

I still think he's wasted there though, attacking when you chase the game by all means but I've seen the game played around him too much in the last 6 months or so, not that I watch lots of Liverpool obviously but when I have seen them he seems to get played around because he is too far up.

One of Gerrards attributes I always thought was how he could be the 'flair' player if you like but he could also stick a tackle in, he seems to have lost that for me lately.

What's happened to Lucas, is he injured again?

And you agree with me about Gerrard don't you Pidg, just admit it, we can take Baz if he gets uppity.
He's not back to the level he was playing at but having Gerrard next to him doesn't help.

Of the two Gerrards been far worse in the last few games which isn't surprising given his age and the fact he's playing 90 minutes for club, pub, king and country at the moment.

That was going to be my other point, surley the bloke needs a rest at some point, he seems to play 90 mins in every game at the moment.

Is Brenton Rodgers afraid of upsetting the faithful?

Must be. If we lose with Gerrard it's 'meh', if we lose without him pundits, commentators, former Liverpool players and fans will go 'OMG, what the ****'s the nutter doing?'

Aye not good really, some Liverpool fans I know *spits* have been saying he needs to be dropped every now and again.

I didn't get it at first but I'm coming round to the way they are seeing him.

As a United fan I don't like him but I can appreciate him, and to me he doesn't look the player he was and needs to be dropped back to get the best oout of him.

He does too much running nowadays.

It's like a really depressing initiation, everyone has been there.

Im just bored, at some point tomorrow ill probably sigh at the futility of it. Then remember how disillusioned I've become with football, crawl back under my rock and very occasionally post in cycling/motorbike/scuba diving threads :p

He does know the legend of the drunken one!!!!!!

I love it when Drunken Master posts in other sections of the forum and other people, well, just don't know what they're getting in to.

Indeed, I saw it in GD the other night when someone quoted him, it was a NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO moment :D

I've just realised I'm being far too polite to the Scouse fans.

You realise you're still ****'s yeah boys?

I agree to an extent. It's not too dissimilar to when teams throw a CB forward, it's a bit of a gamble in the hope that a chance or even half chance falls to him as he's probably our best finisher.

He does. He and Lucas should be competing for the 2nd spot in CM.

And answering your question regarding Rodgers not wanting to upset fans - definitely.

I also think he's a bit lost at the moment. He's stuck between his ideal of playing a 4-3-3 and finding the best system for the players we actually have and as a result we're seeing a lot of compromises in the way we're setting up.

And without wanting to repeat myself, those compromises are centred around the lack of a powerful DM.

GK
Defence
------Gerrard------
Henderson---Lucas
-----Coutinho----
Suarez----Sturridge

Is how I would go, should be good enough as Liverpool don't like wingers apparently.

I'm not sure about the positioning of the front 3 - that central area's going to get very crowded. Playing Coutinho and Suarez either side of Sturridge is an idea though and strangely not something that I can remember us doing as part of a 4-3-3.

Rodgers was initially set on a 4-3-3 when he first joined but fairly quickly changed to a 4-2-3-1 because we weren't retaining the ball well enough in attacking areas and were getting exposed in midfield. With a better front 3 now we can move back to a 4-3-3 but I'm not sure Rodgers is strong enough to force Suarez & Coutinho to play wide regularly.

In fact I'm not sure Rodgers is strong enough in his convictions to make big decisions. We ended up with 4 CB's because he didn't want to choose between Sakho & Agger at the weekend and I've got a feeling we're going to end up playing a 3-4-1-2 just so he can pick Suarez, Sturridge & Coutinho in their favoured positions and fit all his cb's in....and we're still going to have a Mascherano shaped hole in our midfield.

edit: The more I think about it, it's actually a big concern. We need to find a settled system that gets the best out of the players we have soon. Right now we seem a bit lost in terms of a system and direction.

That's actually what I set out trying to do and realised quickly I was making a right balls up of it.

I'm not well :/

Kind of similar to the Aguero/Tevez/Silva movement I was thinking.

Nice draw:

Tottenham Hotspur v Hull City
Newcastle United v Manchester City
Burnley v West Ham United
Arsenal v Chelsea
Birmingham City v Stoke City
Manchester United v Norwich City
Sunderland v Southampton
Leicester City v Fulham

The matches will be played on 29/30 October.

Well, your first team got beaten by our first team a couple of weeks ago, so maybe you need to sort out your selection policy ;)

Our full first team hasnt started a match this season so far as Rafael has been out until last night so no you didnt :D

It was a pretty evenly carp game from both sides last night, with only a select few players really showing anything noteworthy
