Shoes?

I think your best bet is to just ask for them at your local Timpson, even the one I used to use in a little backwater town stocked them, so shouldn't be a problem getting your hands on some r soles.

I get mine resoled at a place which I'm convinced is a front for a drug ring or something.

It's a bonafide "shoe repair shop" (no keycutters etc. just shoe repairs) in the most random location in the world, god knows how they make any money, they do a good job though.

I can also vouch for R Soles. Recently went to Timpson to get some brogues redone. As per a few posts above I noticed there was a few different ratings.

I paid a little over £30 to get them done, should have been £15 but as I made sure the R Sole was used it doubled the costs.

You want to buy shoes that can be resoled in the first place though, as not all can be done.

This, I have not had a pair yet from ASOS (own brand) that can be resoled, I also had the dilemma, keep paying £25 every 6 months or go to somewhere like Jones and spend £150 for ones that will last years and can be resoled...

They'll need to be goodyear welted to be resoled - so you're really looking at a minimum of around £100 for that.

This.. Also you can get much harder wearing soles fitted, you just need the 'R' rated soles as these are the most hard wearing, any shoe repair place will be able to do these, but they generally cost cut and supply cheaper soles, you'll need to specifically ask if they have any 'R' soles there.

This is true. I had mine done with Rs recently. Big improvement.

I get my soles done at Timpson, full leather sole and heel are about £60 with a wear guarantee of 12 months in other words if the sole gets worn out in that period they will re-sole for free

They've been bad when I used them... was slightly naive perhaps but I had a shoe which could have the back bit of the heel removed/replaced and the main sole... was expecting them to be able to do that... pointed out where it was worn and asked for it to be replaced - went to collect and the guy had just ripped the whole sole off and replaced the whole thing sole + heel with some dubious Timpson one - shoe no longer the same shape really and really if they couldn't do what was requested they should really said in the first place.

My 'R' soles sometimes really sting on a night out on the dancefloor. Sitting down makes it worse, but by morning the leather is nice and soft again :)

£40 is dirt cheap for a pair of brogues, Buy 2 pairs of decent ones & find a decent cobbler.

I never expect trainers or shoes to last much longer than 6 months if you are wearing them every day anyway.

Neither did I. Then I started buying good shoes. Paying extra isn't always worth it (you're often paying for fashion or snakeoil) but it often is for shoes. Paying £70-£100 for shoes will probably be cheaper in the long run than paying £20-£40 for shoes. I'm currently using Dr Martens shoes. I've been wearing them all day every day, indoors and out, for several months and there's only slight wear on the sole (which is thick and clearly a seperate piece, i.e. replaceable.). The shoe itself looks new. I think they'll need resoling and reheeling about once a year with my fairly heavy use and I'll probably still be wearing them years from now. They took a little wearing in, but I'm pleased with them.

So that's my advice to the OP - try Dr Martens shoes. You won't get them for £40, but you won't have to get a new pair in 6 months.
