Declined holiday ruining potential opportunity.... What would you?

I realise people are saying that a company don't need a reason to decline holiday but do you think it's worth just having a word with HR? I've spoke with a couple of colleagues and they seem to think it's highly unfair giving other colleagues holiday but declining mine.

I would Steameh. Check the contract, and you'll find that it says you get x number of annual leave, and that you can book them as long as it doesn't disrupts the team. If 2nd/3rd line is only going to be down by 1 person (you), then the manager should honour it. Hell, I work in a CS team that is only made up of 7 people. 4 of us handle informal complaints and the other 3 do formal complaints. The manager will allow 1 from informal and 1 from formal to be off at any time, so that's potentially 2 short at certain times of the year.

I had a crap boss once that would only allow me a week off except the Wednesday, so I rang in sick from Jamaica that day. Surprisingly didn't get sacked despite the obvious tan when I got back in the week after.

Your boss sounds a douche. I'd speak to HR and ask them when you might be allowed to take your holiday allowance and bring it up you've been declined for no good reason.

They don't have to give you a good reason or any reason at all for that matter, if they wanted they could dictate exactly when you were allowed to take your holiday and give you no choice in the matter.

Thats why you should go contracting.

Waste of time being a perm.

It doesn't no but there are IT support jobs currently available.

I have £9k in savings so could survive for a while.

I've been here 2 years. I just think it's a little obvious now the request has been declined.

If you hate the job so much that its causing you distress as per the OP, I would call your managers bluff, threaten to leave if you don't get the requested holiday. If he calls you on it, then good riddance to a bad job you have found yourself trapped in.

He will call me on it. I've already had a discussion with him how unhappy I am.

No point me contacting HR as it is in my contract that manager can decline holiday for business needs.

I haven't read all the posts here so apologies if someone has already suggested but could you not just hand your notice in based on the fact that they aren't giving you the holiday.

Its not quite quitting but at least they understand that your not happy about not getting the holiday and your prepared to leave over it. It could result in them offering you the holiday so at least you have the job you hate. Or it could back fire they accept your notice and you don't have a job but can go on holiday.

The post directly above yours covers this, they'll call his bluff he'll have no job.

I am pretty sure that if you are off sick, even with work related stress, and go on holiday that would be grounds for instant dismissal. I know people that have done it and got away with it but I wouldn't risk it but if you are looking to leave soon who cares? I don't know if a doctor suggestion of going on holiday would class as direct medical advice either.

When a friend was signed off with stress his doctor encouraged him to take a holiday to relax as part of his recovery. If you're off sick it's none of your employers business what you do.

Some decent replies here, and some GD replies too, as to be expected :P

Personally sounds like your job is causing you all manner of problems, and in the not too distant future your health will start to suffer. You sound unhappy in life in general from what you have written. You only live once, take the opportunity and go to Dubai, see if you like it and if you can get a job out there.

As for current job, you have a few options. It doesn't sound like you can actually get it booked off. You have to decide now if you want to play it honest, or with the cards close to your chest.

Tell your boss you are not happy and need time off, you will have it as paid holiday or are happy to take unpaid leave, but either way you need the time off. If he still cannot comply, you can then either call in sick the day you leave, get signed off by the doctors with stress, which is easy to fake, or hand him your weeks notice one week from the day you want to leave. Once in Dubai, avoid getting tanned and don't post stuff on facebook.

Basically you have to decide what in life you value and what you want to achieve. You said yourself you have 9k in savings, you can afford to make this leap of faith if it's what you really want.

As I said, you only live once. Will you live to regret not taking the opportunity?

Hummmmm... I am pretty sure that wouldn't be legally sound advice from a doctor unless he meant it out of sickness period. And I am pretty sure that your employer can call/visit you any time during your sick period to check how you are and when you are intended to return to work.

Nope, during sick leave, it's perfect legal.

Employers are allowed to ask how you are and if you have a return to work date but that's about it. Even if they ask you to attend a meeting to discuss your return/health you can refuse to go until you feel you are able.

Well, after a frustrating few days I've decided to knock going to Dubai on the head for a bit.

The timing just isn't right to be calling in sick at work. As much as I hate the place my boss is being pretty supportive (besides the annual leave), he's forwarded my CV onto a couple of recruitment contacts and I need a reference from him.

I'm just gonna have to be patient for my trip out there. Probably talking March next year now :(. Gutted.
