Steam reveal

i don't think microsoft will ditch the openness of the windows platform, businesses rely on custom applications developed yonks ago, and need newer versions to windows to always be compatiable with them, if that suddenly stops working for one release? microsoft is cutting out a huge chunk of profit.

This steambox is a reaction the original/current Xbox One digital download/sharing etc, alongside windows 8 and the windows store, it would be a nice eco system to compete with steam's store. So valve are releasing something new, a new OS which ties you away from windows, there just putting there own little market up. Although i worry we will see exclusives, which would be very hypocritical for valve to do with the recent empthasis on openness.

As someone else noted just now, Steam itself was incredibly unpopular as an idea when Valve first came out with it... but look at it now... I for one trust them and I think they've given this a great deal of thought, I can't wait to see where this leads... I want it to work really badly, because I love Linux and I'd have forgotten Windows years ago if I didn't have to keep it for my games

So is AMD's "Mantle" API open source? I like the idea in principle but it seems a bit odd to say "Hoooray down with DirectX's restrictions on a particular OS" and then in the same breath "Yaaay now we can have Mantle which is exclusive for AMD stuff"... Hmm

Console gamers and casual PC gamers are not going to fork out for one of these.

Speak for yourself. I spend a good deal of money on keeping a current gaming rig - why wouldn't I want to experience that on a home cinema setup? One of the best things to happen to PC gaming in recent years is the amount of decent console/arcade style games that have made it to the platform. Games designed to be played with a pad on a huge screen. When GTA5 comes around on the PC I want to be sitting on the sofa, playing it with a pad with every setting maxed out - not on a cheap pc that my main rig in the office wees all over from a height. If the streaming works well this will be a day one purchase. We could have done with this years ago!

Lol'd.

I still think the reveal on Friday will be Source 2. Wouldn't mind it being the input device though.

My bets on it being some sort of controller maybe with some biometric inputs? That would make sense since this announcement seems to be aimed the living room, Source 2 doesn't really fit into that picture so far.

I initially though it a shame that they kept the controller for the final announcement, as this seemed the most unexciting of the three. But then again maybe they have managed something revolutionary, I'm really looking forward to seeing what it is.

The idea of the Steam Box and Steam OS is very appealing to me. While it's great they are going big screen + controller, will we see the decline in qood quality RTS that works better with Keyboard and Mouse ?

I'd love a controller that replicates the mouse/keyb from comfort of your settee.

I can do most of that already, my xbox controller has a long enough cord to reach from my desk to the sofa, and of course, I have remote control software that turns any android device into a virtual keyboard/mouse.. job done..

I'm not sure I'd be happy with a Steam OS, I mean I like having freedom to get my PC games from all over the place, physical copies, from GOG, Origin, Steam, freeware/indie etc. If I want one company dictating my gaming platform then you might as well just stick with a console, they are always going to be cheaper then a budget gaming PC and the extra graphical benefits of PC games can only be achieved with the top of the line hardware, i.e. not in a budget PC, not with decent FPS at least.

I guess growing up with Windows on PCs there is a little nostalgia as well. Build a rig install Windows, thankfully Microsoft are releasing a full retail version of 8.1.

Me too actually even now my wife is saying why have a 42" TV in the living room and I'm sitting hunched over the PC 22" in the office why not bring the PC into the living room. The PC of today is very powerful and even quieter than my Blu Ray Player.

Now with several providers offering HD downloads and unlimited bandwidth it's time for the PC to take it's place in the living room.

Now if I could find a really good freeview tuner for my PC I could even get rid of the SKY.

i got a good hd tv tuner but it doesnt work for sky for obvous reasons

I've had a decent powered HTPC in the living room for a couple of years - current iteration is a QX9650 with a 6970, and a 120GB SSD.

With XBMC, Steam's Big Picture mode and a couple of 360 wireless controllers - it makes a brilliant gaming system hooked up to the 42" TV (and soon to the projector, once I get myself a screen)

I had enough of underpowered machines which had limited media playback capabilities, hence why my HTPC is a bit of a beast (and fully watercooled, to keep the noise levels down)

I've also got a BlackGold BGT3620 dual-tuner HD FreeView tuner in my server (in the cellar) which does my TV recording/playback, meaning that I can have the fast HTPC as well as a lower powered, always-on server with plenty of noisy mechanical hard drives for TV/media serving tucked out of the way.

...

Yes but that puts you in a tiny tiny minority. SteamBoxOS isn't been made for you it just can't rely on people having high end systems in the living room.

Games that work best on PC are FPS and RTS, both due to keyboard and mouse for control and quality monitors 60Hz/120Hz+ no motion blur etx. Move to a tv and its a compromise.

Games that would benefit are Witcher/Syrim/GTA etc. Is the market big enough? I can't see people choosing steambox over ps4/xone.

Because that way you can't use it if SWMBO wants to watch something else on tv... and you will seldom be allowed to use it!?!?!

It all comes down to cost and performance. Game costs tend to be cheaper than consoles, so as long as the performance is similar or better (likely) and the price isn't exorbitant. Then it will gain a foothold

If anything, I would just like yo own one of these smaller computers :p I know that the XI3 computers shown a while ago at an expo have no relation to Valves current Steam Machine, but they looked pretty nice. If they nail the correct price to performance ratio, as well as size (so I can take from one TV to another) I, and no doubt other people will be happy with the result.

Also playing Steam games in the living room is cool too, I guess.
