Steam reveal

Have always wanted a seamless way for controllers to work with Steam, xpadder can be a pain sometimes. I will definitely buy a Steam controller.

The thing is it's a bit of a fallacy that Windows kernal is bloated and gets in the way of games. Once windows has handed over to a game full screen it's remarkably good at getting out of the apps way (unless you have lots of other stuff running in the background). DX, OpenGL and drivers have been optimized for Windows over years for performance so as much as I like Linux for a lightweight general purpose OS I'm yet to see anything to suggest it inherently will run a game noticeably "faster" on reasonable spec hardware.

Isn't the "window is well bloated" arguement just a hangover from bad times gone past?

The whole issue I have with controllers is the thumb control. I have been gaming with a M+KB for over 20 years. I have tried to use controllers but I just do not have that sort of fine control over my thumbs, it is unnatural unless you have grown up with controllers.

But we will see how it/I evolves.

Looking forward to giving the gamepad a go! Will it replace the mouse, who can tell, but if MS have there way were going to be a whole lot less dependant on it so i can see why valve have taken this approach!

I loathe trackpads on laptops but i dont see why this would have anything like the same issues. Your thumbs are a lot more mobile compared to the index finger.

Oh well the one thing I wanted HL3 never came and they have produced three items I have no interest in or see as that interesting beyond them expanding their wallets.

It's really disheartening, the number of people crying about HL3. It was NEVER going to be a game. Seriously...

And I'd love for you to show me a company which does anything that is not for the explicit purpose of "expanding their wallets". Not interested in the products? (Though I can't see how you could have possible made up you mind with the little information we've had so far) Don't buy them. It's as simple as that

Its funny to see so many people writing this off, they've been designing and testing this for ages but clearly random people know its rubbish based on a picture.

I don't know if it will be good or not, but I'm intrigued and look forward to trying it out one day.

Well done to them for trying something different, nothing has really happened with controllers for years and this is an interesting idea. And hey, nobody will be forced to use it.

I think it looks great personally, I'm definitely interested to see what is going to happen with all this next year!

Trying hard not to laugh to these but I am failing horribly!

Class, I had to share this out to my friends :D:D:D

Sorry unless you work from Valve and are about to let out a company secret about a major IP you don't know that Half Life 3 will or wont happen. Also I made a statement of fact that these products are purely in my view nothing but a cash generator than an advancement of the PC gaming market. The OS is a nice idea, but most people these days don't purely game on their PC's. I admit not all have more than one monitor but I am sitting here running Minecraft, iplayer and writing this reply listening to the Stan style from a fan to Gabe about HL. I wouldn't dual boot or have steam as my OS, VM is as close as I would get to using it and that has to be for an exclusive title that I couldn't do without.

I for sure don't want a OS that will be poorly supported by third parties for a long time for all the extras that I do while gaming (Even Wine isn't a 100% guarantee route for Steams content and they are going to be at it a good time trying to Fix and run the steam back catalogue) and I wouldn't pay for a 'PC console' that they want to push with the OS.
There is a lot people asking some rather big questions about these hardware platforms and how money will be made to drive this. If value finance these kits they will have to underwrite a project that from all educated guesses cant last to long as their pockets aren't like MS, Sony, AMD or NVidia's, if they go for hardware manufactures trying to make profit from the hardware side these kits aren't going to perform as well as a console hardware configuration if they go for the budget route and can you see a massive amount of sales from a £1k kit?

These thoughts are not just my own, there is a lot of noise all over the net asking these questions. I'm skeptical and I can only hope that if this project does go south they don't take Steam platform with them and again I have no issue with them making profits.

Anything Steam do which isn't around pc based gaming isn't good for us pc gamers IMO.

I agree and I worry that they bring steam into danger due the possible stress of financing this project if it goes wrong.

It almost makes me wish I had good old physical copies of my steam games now.

Actually what does happen if Steam managed to go down the pan one day? Would games bought on Steam still work?

This is either genius or a really dumb move by Valve.

Have they not seen or used touch screen devices with games on them? I personally find mobile gaming to be horrible and judging by the controller it looks to be the exact same experience but just on a bigger screen.

I'm on the fence at the moment. When I build my next pc I could move this one downstairs as a games pc and not having to buy another copy of windows would be a bonus.
The pad? Well, it needs to by tried really, I would have thought it would be better than a conventional pad for fps games otherwise why would exist?
Looks **** though.

Looking forward to trying the pad but it has to be something very special to beat the 360 pad for when I need one on PC. Not too bothered about the OS I'm happy to stick with Windows for the time being.

My sentiments exactly, have tried a controller on my PC and find it difficult; simply not that dexterous. Gaming on a PS3 tends to hurt my hands!

I am looking forward to this, I hope that steam do well and succeed with their plans:) I will buy the controller and I will install Steamos. I will most likely build a games pc for my boy with Steamos when he is old enough to have his own gaming pc.

I tend to think it's simply Steam have something like 75% of the PC market and not likely to gain much more as EA has their own digital distribution platform so they've decided they want to get a slice of the Console market. It's a console play pure and simple, nothing to do with PCs beyond wanting to use their existing PC user base to give them a head start. I just can't see anyone other than the most ardent Valve fans spending £500 on a PC to go in the living room with all the faf that entails compared to a dedicated console for under the TV / armchair gaming.

Actually, this whole conversation has had me thinking just how much of my PC gaming is dependant on Steam these days. As much as it's a bit of a pain it's time to spread some of my purchases across other services I think, don't think a monopoly is great for anyone especially given Valves already questionably policies around DRM and lack of being able to resell the games I've bought (despite European rulings to the contrary I seem to remember). The internet had a joint fit when Microsoft suggested similar plan for Xbox one but as it's Valve people shrug and accept it. Odd..
