Steam reveal

People complaining that this is just a cash cow for Valve, when they want them to release Half-Life 3, one of the most anticipated games of all time instead? Wow, just wow.

Pot, meet kettle.

Some impressions from developers on the controller here.

Game creators who have tried Valve's unusual new game controller tell Kotaku that the device holds a lot of promise. But make no mistake, they also say it feels pretty different from what we're used to

...

"It's familiar enough to be accessible (I believe they tried less conventional designs before they went with a form factor similar to existing gamepads), but much more precise for (say) anything WASD+mouse."

Shouldn't this thread be in the console forum?

XPadder already does pretty much the same thing on a wired/wireless X360 gamepad  Valve are going to take a financial bath here all they are doing is offering up a competitor to PS4/XB1/X360 etc etc why not just partner with Dell's Alienware X51 to begin with would have saved them so much money :(

This is either a stroke of genius by Valve and they have engineered a one size fits all solution to having one single controller for ALL PC games running from Steam, or it is another failed attempt at controller innovation.

Reading some of the feedback over at Kotaku from games developers was actually more reassuring then I what I felt when I first saw the announcement yesterday.

If Valve pull this one off, and lets face it, Valve have deep pockets and they are not in the habit of making hugely stupid mistakes and are actually the one company I know that somehow develops a platform and make it super successful then Valve are just about to revolutionise PC Gaming even if the die hard old school PC gamer isn't liking it.

So many fear change, Valve have actually just provided the true next gen. Nintendo sorta changed gaming years ago with Wii.

But it remains to be seen if what Valve have started to do can actually become the new standard for PC gaming..

Are gamers willing to let go of Windows, 360 controllers, Keyboard /Mouse, Direct X and go with Linux, one controller, a big screen TV and a third party supplied box to host or stream their games onto?

I think i'd be willing to give Valve a fair crack at the whip on this one and will watch the development of this one very closely..

Valve are about to meet up with Sony and Microsoft with regards to competing for space under the living room TV. Its crowded already, so next move by anyone of these will be interesting indeed. But another player into the living room can be only good for competition right? hmmm hope Valve have got this one right, I'm excited as I now agree - PC gaming needs change.

Its stale, Direct X is stale, sometimes change is good..

Are you really suggesting a partnership with Alienware? The most overpriced 'gaming' rigs around???

I'm perfectly comfortable sitting at a desk with a keyboard and mouse.
I don't even own a game controller other than a wheel and pedals for driving games.
I also like to alt tab , read the net etc every so often

Alienware have produced good gaming laptops coupled with awful support sadly. Their desktops however are very overpriced and agreed too expensive as the X51 is neither good value or a good performer for the money paid sadly.

Always like the engineering of alienware laptops as mentioned by me already but the premium you pay for such a portable gaming rig is huge..

and this is coming from me, as i own a Alienware M17x r4, cracking performance for a laptop, but I know deep down I paid quite a lot of money to allow me to play games in my living room as I don't have a spare room for a true gaming rig. I've got a small desk in the dining room, but its not ideal and this is why a steambox under the telly excites me quite a bit.

But an alienware partnership would make it too expensive, I mean just how much is that trackpad /touchscreen controller going to cost? It doesn't look cheap IMO

Lengthy hands on impressions of the controller from Tommy Refenes of Team Meat:

Couple of quick quotes:

I was able to play Meat Boy the way Meat Boy can be played on an advanced level (and I’m rusty at it).

I played through Spelunky and the controller worked great.

Impressions from people who've used it have all been quite positive so far.

Just read some other Dev hands on, sounds like they're off to a great start with it, which is hardly unsurprising unless you're opposed to change

Umm, no.

Although console owners who have always used a controller are happy with them, most PC gamers do not like using a controller for things like FPS or RTS. Valve are trying to come up with a solution, a different type of controller that offers us the precision we want. Its not the same as just using an XBox controller to play existing games.

Hopefully they can get it right.

Yes agreed. x padder is truly horrific for mapping most fps games on PC without native controller support anyhow. Without aim assist using an analogue stick mapped to WASD is so woeful its not even funny.

Valve would have done quite a lot of research into this one. As I said, they are aiming for a one size fits all approach.

Rather then have a box under your telly with then having wireless keyboard, mouse, 360 controller etc, valve have attempted to remove all this clutter and have one single controller to do that lot... A very big task, and Valve might have solved the problem. Like I said, either genius or it'll be another product to be listed on wikipedia under tried but failed..

hope its not the latter TBH
