*** iPhone 5S/5C - September 10th ***

Apparently mine is due for delivery today but I've got home and haven't got anything yet... Still time left I suppose :p

The way it's interpreted is that "free" means you do not pay anything upfront for a new handset when your contract is up for renewal. It's an upgrade because you are getting a newer/better handset for the same monthly sum as what you are paying as before. I'd like to think most people in this thread know that the actual phone isn't free.

Most people in this thread probably do but I think the point he's making is that a staggering percentage of the general public seem to be under the impression that the phones are indeed free and not subsidised by the contract at all. Tell such people that you have a similar contract for a small fraction of the price and they're genuinely baffled as to how this can be the case

It's even worse in the US due to the way they sell contract subsidised phones directly from Apple too, which even leads to the Apple keynotes quoting contract subsidised prices rather than the full outright purchase price, which I find amazing.

Well finally, 5S is here and set up. :D Initial impressions: fast, lovely to have the extra screen estate but still in reasonable limits, camera is awesome, TouchID is very slick and the Lightning connector is a massive step up from the 30 pin job.

Coming from a 4 this was well worth the wait and the cost. Pleased.

For those interested in the case, here's some dodgy pics taken with an SLR in potato setting. :D

The colour/gamma calibration on my monitor is terrible, is anyone wants to lend me a colour tool that would be awesome. :D

Spigen Lightning cable works a treat btw, and the screen protectors go on well. The Crystal Optics one has a horrible feel to it mind, feels like an old overhead projector acetate. That'll be coming off shortly!

How long do Apple take while the 'prepare to dispatch'?

And WTF is it? In my mind, it's a queue of demotivated and/or nervous UPS guys waiting by the factory and Apple employees running up and down high-fiveing them and giving them encouragement and moral support for the upcoming dispatch.

Popped into a shop the other day and held the 5C.

Anyone else think it feels really cheap? My wife said it looked cheap and nasty.

Yep even my 60 yr old mum said the same thing, and she wants the gold iphone 5s 32gb model which is simply impossible to get hold of from what i have been told today by the apple store genius. Even ordering online will take a few weeks, guess everyone is after a gold one.

Compared to the 5/5s the 5c appears cheap, compared to the 3G/3GS the build quality is superb - no noticeable gap between the plastic and glass, the phone feels well balanced and sturdy and sits very comfortably in my hand, it doesn't sound hollow and the plastic looks as if it will do better if (when) dropped.

I still think it's a complete rip-off but my wife loves it.

After receiving my iPhone 5S 64gb yesterday and using it for a while, I've decided to send it back for a refund. I won't deny that the phone is very good and if I didn't have a 5 beforehand I would have kept it without question. Unfortunately for me the phone doesn't offer a huge perceivable difference to the 5 other than the TouchID sensor, which I have to admit is great and I hope apple continue to offer this feature for their newer products. I'll probably end waiting 6 months and buying one second hand at a cheaper price, £710 for the 64gb version is a huge dent to the wallet. In the meantime I'll look out for a cheap 64gb 5 to keep me going, as I'm struggling for space with my current 32gb!
