Should We All Celebrate Christmas?

Naturally speaking it is the time of year when we have the shortest day. Everyone experiences that.

In harsher times it is the time of year you would hope to have enough to survive the dark and the coming winter.

If one had enough then one would feel glad about this, but it was also the time of year when there were people without, and surely by helping them survive by giving is where the gifting really comes from?

Indeed. It's also worth celebrating the fact that the days are going to start getting longer again, plus as the darkest point it's the most useful time to try to make things a bit more cheerful with decorations etc.

Religion not necessary to see that it's a great time for a festival.

That could be anyone?

Well anyone but you obviously... which is why people say stuff like this I guess ._.

No, but that was actually advice handed out by the "The Working Group Against Racism in Children's Resources", it just wasn't followed.
Although the very fact we have people handing out such PC dribble is of concern.

Well of course it could be anyone, but you know it isn't. It's the same people in any thread where there is the remotest of chances of pushing 'their' backwards views about a certain type of human being.....Sorry Religion ;)
So one small group of people 'suggested' it be changed. 2 nurseries actually changed it out of the whole country of schools and nurseries and that's concerning for you..... *Yawns*

Get a grip.

"Commentators have asserted that these controversies have been exaggerated or distorted by some elements of the press as part of a more general campaign against political correctness."
You don't say

He also doesn't like the fact that the Sabbath is on sunday, as he says the bible teaches the Sabbath is on Saturday.

They stole that from the pagans too, Sunday was the pagan day of worship. Also, they built churches on the sites of pagan worship. Makes the conversion to Christianity a lot less disruptive that way, they are worshiping in the same place, same day of the week and same times of the year just a different deity.

Of course, but then I'm opposing this awful practice of yah-booing from the sidelines, if you disagree with people in a thread then quote them.

Freedom of speech isn't it? And I'm sure 'everyone's' views would defy being put into one box.
When hundreds of people die every month over religion then the opportunity to question it's apologists is surely a minor concession?

I didn't know anyone actually changed their policy over this, although that wasn't my concern. It's the very existence of these liberal-fascist pressure groups masquerading as charities that concerns.
Get a grip.
Gripped.

How dare people oppose political correctness, don't they know it's for their own good?

and its celebrated now for the same reason it was back then.

winter's **** so lets get drunk.

It's a bit more than that (at least as far back as recorded history goes and probably before), but that's the gist of it.

If I was absolute dictator, I'd take a straightforward approach and acknowledge that different festivals are celebrated at the same time. So there would be a secular midwinter festival, which is what government bodies would refer to and pay for, and any theists could have seperate religious rituals if they wanted to and pay for them themselves.

Christians have absolutely no basis for objecting to any secular festivals at the same time as their Christmas and it's hypocritical for them to object to those festivals being called Christmas. Christians made Christmas up as part of their policy of corrupting pre-existing festivals to increase the power of the Christian church, notably Saturnalia and the Festival of the Invincible Sun as part of their conquest of the Roman empire. It even contradicts their own bible, which rules out midwinter as the birthday of Jesus. But what the hell, let them keep the name and date. A religion doesn't have to be consistent with anything, even itself, because it doesn't have to be rational in any way.

If it was actually about religion then no Christian would object to publically funded festival stuff that isn't Christian being called something other than Christmas. So there wouldn't be any objections to holiday trees, winter festivals and suchlike. But there are, because it's about power.

i try and just enjoy it for what it is. everyone else is normally off so its time to catch up, eat, get drunk etc
it's time off to look forward to at the start winter so

Lets be honest in these days of doom and gloom, we could all do with a good excuse to go have some fun, 'stimulate' the economy, get out with friends and have a week off work 8o))

To me the religous aspect of Christmas has no influence, its just a traditional time for a bit of merriment..

Celebrating the Sun's lowest point, give or take a few days, will always be worth raising a glass to. It's got nothing to do with religion, even if one religion has done a great job of hitching itself to the calendar's wagon.

I'd enjoy Christmas a lot more if I didn't work in retail. Ho, ho, holy heck, we're only shut for a day people! :->

Those wanting mince pies all year round, just buy eccles cakes. Mincey type filling and much nicer pastry anyway.
Just need shops to bring back lardy cake, i haven't seen lardy cake for years. :(

WTH? Are you trying to persuade us to accept some type of mince pie/eccles cake equivalency?

There is no comparison!

I celebrate it because of tradition, don't care about the religious side at all.

Tradition and cultural, even Wikipedia defines it as such.

Christ Mass should be observed by Christians but is sadly forgotten in what has now become a commercialised farce. If I were a Christian I would most definitely attend the Mass everything else is just BS
