Tommy Robinson quits the EDL

I can't help but think that the football season has started and therefore numbers to their marches would be on the decline.

I think it's harsh to brand football fans as EDL members. Not all football fans are stupid.

So the time has come for the EDL to disband itself given the leadership is quitting,

He's basically got bored. No one's taking enough notice so it's time to move and find another way to stir up trouble.

Not all EDL members are stupid either

LOL

I concur although EDL does draw upon the thugs from football - casuals and firms associate themselves with the group

Yeah, but those people aren't really footy fans anyway. They have used football to justify themselves for a long time. They are the type to not miss an EDL day out causing trouble.

Just heard on Radio 4 that many of the leadership may have resigned... Unconfirmed but funny if true.

I can see what Tommy was trying to accomplish,And i agree with him...but to me hes started something that was never going to go anywhere,All those demonstrations nothing will change..nobody cares.

The problem with a lot of the EDL members (Not all of them),they're racist,Far right and DO act like football hooligans...,Not what the EDL was intended to be for, with people like this nothing going to happen,They're all just considered as a racist group...which is unacceptable imo.

Come on that's like the old "suicide bombers are not true Muslims" line...

I think its fairly apparent that the EDL has roots amongst football hooligans... criticising that doesn't necessarily mean anyone is trying to infer that ordinary football fans are in anyway associated with it... and likewise most ordinary Muslims in the UK have got nothing to do with extremism.

Not really, when these people rarely, if ever, went to matches. They travelled to other places on game day as part of a 'firm' to fight other 'firms'. What does that have to do with football?

They never wear their team colours, they don't go to their team's matches. What makes them football fans?

Fixed that for you.

:)

Not quite, the mention of the NF a few posts up from mine reminded me of when in the 80s several NF politicians joined/applied to join the Conservative Party as Thatcher's political ideology was more in keeping with their own.

Didn't they start British Freedom Party and quit after Kevin Carroll lost the election for a PCC role in Luton ?

Not sure if they are made for politics, as they still have a street mentality the same problem the NF had in the 70's

It's not a far stretch though.

I mean I've seen people use football stats in domestic violence research because it's been proven domestic violence at the local level rises significantly when the local football team loses.

It doesn't mean all people who like football beat their wife, but it could mean that a lot of wife beaters like football. I don't think anyone would suggest that it's representative of the entire population of football fans.
