** GIBBO's EXPLANATION OF THE NEW AMD LINEUP - WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY? **

Good work, Gibbo! ;)

It is a bit of a shame that the new line of cards is quite average in their performance. I hoped these cards will blow nVidia out of the water and we'll have some shake up of the prices.. Or am I missing something and there will be more AMD cards to come out ?

Edit: Doh missed the other two cards to come that will be at the high end of the spectrum. I do find AMD card hierarchy very confusing.. I guess that's why I tend to stick to nVidia :D

Just out of interest, but how do you go about getting the True Audio sound from HDMI to a pair of normal headphones? Is there an adaptor available? Don't ask me to plug them into my TV :D

TrueAudio is not a soundcard or a sound delivery system, is it a DSP for processing sounds in a game's 3D soundscape. It is a built in hardware sound engine that can tie the game and the graphics tightly to the sound calculations.

You still need a soundcard on onboard sound to get the actual sound from the game to a pair of headphones.

Yes, the R9 280X is a mid range card, next up is the R9 290X which is <GTX Titan performance

[sarcasm]

The R290 and R290X are mid-range too, because the 7990 is high-end

[/sarcasm]

How can you define a £250 - £300 card as mid-range, and why do people keep saying this each generation?

That's only £50 short of a PS4.

240,250 = low end
260,270 = mid range
280,290 = high end
7990, lolTitan = gold-plated iPhone land

And its only in the 270x, 290 and 290x. The other cards are just re-brands...... actually 7970>8970>280x ..... is that a record? :D

260X, 290(X). It was also in the 7790, just disabled in the driver, and is going to be enabled by a future driver update for that card, apparently.

The 7790 is newer than the other 7xxx cards, so it makes sense that it shares some features of the upcoming Hawaii cards.

So Gibbo! You chaps don't happen to have plugged in a 280 into a Mac Pro to see if OSX has drivers for them like it does for the 7950/70?

I don't get some people...... It's been known for weeks now that the 280X is nothing more then a re-baged 7970 but AT A LOWER PRICE POINT and people are disappointed with it?

The 280X makes the GTX770 look like the over priced waste of silicon it is...

The 280X does not seem to overclock as well as a HD 7970 which means a GTX 770 will get the better of it.

I'll believe it when i see it. In all the bench threads the 770 still sits below the 7970. Even Scotty's 770 with 1.4 volts falls below. Most people won't be able to put 1.4v through a voltage locked card like scotty did with his msi lightning 770.

I don't think I've seen a review yet that overclocks the 280X with extra voltage, most of them use stock voltages and in that case the 280X hits the same clocks most 7970's do on stock voltage.

That's the point, based on what I have seen on overclocking the 280X that would put them below most HD 7970s. Overclocks of around 1150/1700 is not that good and would struggle to beat a stock Matrix Platinum.

Bit of a noob question but will hd79 series support mantle or is it locked to the new r7/r9 cards?

Im buying one or the other in the morning depending.

Cheers

You need to look at typical 7970 and 7970ghz clocks these websites achieve. They're about the same. They never really push the card that hard and most of them don't bother to add voltage. I predict similar results to your typical 7970ghz.

Exactly, not a single review I've read so far has voltage tweaked the 280X while overclocking....
