Formula 1 reserve racing driver Maria De Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville, Spain.

No cause of death has yet been released for the 33-year-old Spaniard, who lost her right eye in a crash while testing for the Marussia team last year.

We started discussing this in the off-topic thread.

Judging by Twitter, it seems to have come out of the blue for the teams in Japan but based on the family's statement, it sounds like it wasn't unexpected.

Link to statement, do you mean medical, depression etc.?

RIP very sad news :(

Through illness, or a suggestion she took her own life?

Sad news. RIP.

Maybe I've misinterpreted it:

A message on de Villota's Facebook page said:
Dear friends: Maria has left us. She has gone to heaven and all the angels. We thank God for the year and a half more that we had together. Signed: Family Villota.

To me “We thank god for the year and a half more that we had together” suggests she was on bought time.

Maybe they are just saying they thought they had lost her when she crashed.

There's no indication of cause of death yet so I'm not sure whether it was a complication with her recover (which I thought was complete apart from her eye) or maybe she hasn't coped with life after the crash very well.

Either way, it's incredibly sad.

The way I read that, is they had an extra year and a half after the crash she suffered - which she wasn't expected to live through. She lost an eye and suffered huge head trauma, so it makes sense for me :)

Not what I was expecting when I clicked onto the bbc F1 site this morning, terrible terrible news!
