Have you successfully quit smoking?

Been stopped for a year and a half. I wish I had never started 28 years ago and just put all that money in a pot and see how much I would have now.

Was a twenty a day Marlboro red man. LOVED them but worried about what they would do to me long-term. Had great fun smoking at uni and at pubs pre-ban though.

Quit in Jan 2005 through cold turkey [by which I mean I stopped buying them]. Over the next couple of years I had quite a few cigarettes on and off with friends when out. Since about 2007 I've had one or two for the 'experience' and disliked it each time.

....

by definition vaping = smoking
you burn a substance and inhale it you are still addicted but in denial

Hey Arknor that quote leans more towards vaporizers which burn actual combustable elements.

IE they vaporize actual tobacco and or herbs(the wowie types lol)

Those types of substances combust and produce actual smoke, carbon monoxide and other highly toxic things which get inhaled.

An electronic vaporizer that atomizes liquid does not combust the liquid merely rip atomize the juice to produce water vapor which delivers nicotine.

Ofcourse there are juices which dont have nicotine in them and a lot of people vape that so they can slowly ween the habbit of having something in there hand out of there system.

Aslong as your not vaping materials that burn under fire or extreme heat its not combustion aka Juice which just turns into water vapor.

Hope that clears it up for you.

I gave up over 10 years ago now purely because I was told I couldn't do it and tbh I am very stubborn and went to prove that person wrong - which I guess is why the did it! I will say though not a day goes by without 'cravings' however you just ignore them and carry on.

I think the key for me was quite simple to just say I am a non-smoker. Previously when I tried to give up if I then had a cigarette I had lapsed and failed. I turned that around to I am a non-smoker who just had a cigarette that does not make me a smoker. Just that subtle shift of emphasis and framing makes a big difference I think.

Really struggled to give up before but found success with e-cigs.

Vaped for about a month then couldn't be bothered to refill one day and now haven't had any nicotine for over a month. Feel great and won't be going back this time.

Binned all smoking/vaping related kit and have taken up a marshal art.

Good times. :)

Now in phase 2 of weening myself off of nicotine...

Phase 1 - cigarettes to vaping at 16mg
Phase 2 - 8mg vaping
Phase 3 - 0mg vaping
Phase 4 - stop vaping

I just did the phase 1 (24mg) to Phase 2 (16mg) transation, found it was easy, then the cold turkey bit...and to be honest I have felt far worse stoppping the vaping than the ciggies

Stopped successfully for 4 weeks and 1 day so far :)

Went for step 2 patches for 3 weeks then cold turkey. Yeah I've had my craving moments early on but after that its fine.

I know its tough but the best way to stop is to break the routine of smoking and persevere. Personally I dont see the point in vaping - our bodies dont need nicotine, its just spending your money for nothing! (like I say - my opinion!)

If YOU want to stop, YOU will - if YOU'RE ready.

(I smoked for 18 years on around 15 a day)

Just stopped 15 years ago in my 40`s now. Woke up one morning and enough was enough.

No patches, no pills. Just plain old moral fibre.

I have been a social smoker for the last 5 years or so, only smoking when drinking and being one of those annoying people who buys a packet of 10 at the weekend and then stealing cigs of mates when I run out.

Had my last cig 4 and a half weeks ago, and haven't smoked since. It wasn't intentional, but has happened mainly because I haven't been out on a bender in that time. I was at a mate's house last night and 3 of the 5 there smoked through the night, but I didn't feel the need after 4 weeks off it, so am quite chuffed about that.

I wasn't much of an addict anyway though, I could happily go 2 weeks without a cig, so it's not that much of leap to do 4 weeks.

Detoxing greatly helped me to stop craving cigarettes after I quit smoking. The programme on HaltSmoking.net has been a great service. The only thing is now I'm highly sensitive to cigarette smoke when others light up.

You've described the typical post-smoking symptoms. You need to detox your lungs. You'll find more of the misery you described as you detox - but in the end it's worth it because you'll be able to move on and have a healthier life once you've detoxed. The programme at http://haltsmoking.net will show you what to do.

5 Months here and still going strong, haven't had a craving for a smoke in 5 months

I found it very very easy to give up this time and this will be for good, hate the smell of people smoking now and the smell they give off once they have had a smoke, turns my stomach.

Stopped smoking about 20 hours ago, had enough of having a stinking house, spending loads of money, having to nip out all the time at work, increasing my chance of lung cancer and being unfit.

I did quit for a week a few months ago but I feel this time I am gonna do it. Wish me luck.

Two years ago, I decided to properly quit, went cold turkey and did quite well, right up until christmas last year. I felt miserable, so went out and got a pack, after all, what is one packet right? Well, a couple of months later, I was still smoking, and came down with a particularly nasty cold (stupid winter that never ends), you know the kind of cough that once you start, just doesn't want to stop until you've ejected most of a lung. Well, after a few days of coughing my lungs up, I decided that I was desperately needing a smoke to calm my nerves.. and it was the worst taste I have EVER experienced, but I figured that I was just not breathing smoothly, as I was quite short of breath at the time. Another few days passed, and I tried another smoke, and the result was the same, one or two draws upon the cigarette, and I stubbed it out in disgust.

On that day, I threw away almost an entire pouch of tobacco, all my papers and lighters (except one in my toolbox). And the ashtray got relegated to the pit under the sink.

I've not touched a smoke since then and hope this will remain so for a long time to come. Yes I was addicted to smoking, and I enjoyed it, and I don't care what people think of me for that, I don't drink alcohol, and I don't judge those that do.

As for people that criticise those that use the vapour things, I would point out, that by making the switch, they are removing almost all of the toxic byproducts found in cigarette smoke, which in the long run, is better for them. Or is it the 'second hand vapor' that you have a problem with? hmm.. better not use the kettle in future.

The only thing is now I'm highly sensitive to cigarette smoke when others light up.

Mmmm, yes that waft of fresh cig smoke still gets me now. Even watching people smoking gets my nerves going. I wont lie, after nearly 2 years of quitting I still miss it :( and could easily go back to smoking. It's all in the head now... I know that and I would be a fool to start again.

We are all bloody fools for starting in the first place! :D Disgusting and expensive habit.

EDIT: Just want to add for all the people quitting or thinking of quitting... DO IT!, I really wish you all the best in quitting. It will be one of the best things you ever do for yourselves and your family and friends.
