Neighbour asked to scrounge our wifi

Why would you give an old lady internet other than a young person? Old ladies can be just as bad. Manipulative old hags, a lot of them.

Not really, I think you can tell a horrible old bag from an old dear quite easily.

Old people aren't as tech savvy in general, it's unlikely she's going to be torrenting a load of porn and films.

No - think about the legalities, you are accountable for your connection.

Then think about the technical support you may end up giving her, if it's not responsive etc.

Come on OP this is a no brainer

Definitely not she could be doing almost anything.

Regarding the security and who is responsible part.

How does this work with proper public networks such as those in restaurants and airports, or even the BT Open that makes use of routers?

Are there ways with this to avoid liability?

They are regarded like an ISP in law for the most part and seen as a conduit, doesn't make them completely free of liability though.

Anyone operating a wifi hotspot will be routing stuff through a proxy server if they have any sense at all - and will be applying filters there (or a similar mechanism). Can you see the daily mail headline of "Children Exposed to Porn while Eating in Burger Bar" if they didn't ?

If something dodgy is going on, your ISP will be giving your address out to Plod/MI5/ NSA etc based on their connection to you i.e. your Router/Gateway. They don't know what you have got connected behind that, so the fact it was a freeloader's device and not yours isn't going to cut it. You'll be the one with all your kit taken away for forensic searches.

Tell her to go freeload somewhere else. The walk to Maccy D's will probably do her good.

Give her limited access to a virtual network, and run packet software on the router (your pc) and have fun!

absolutely not. you wouldn't ask to share your neighbour's water or electric. why should this be any different?

i can't believe people are saying no based on what they might do with it. that really isn't the point at all.

I didn't think it was as cut and dry as 'your connection, your responsibility'. If you drive round our estate you'll pick up tens of connections that are open. Rarely do you see the padlock.

Can't see that happening people could be connected via their own mobile network (you can get adult content filters disabled by your provider). Infact a lot of these wifi hotspots operate through i.e. O2, BT, etc. where you can have an account and access it through that with adult controls disabled.

If I had an elderly woman living closeby or something then maybe, you know, someone who just wants to use facebook, google and do some shopping. Why not.

Or maybe someone who had family staying for a little while and wanted to offer them internet, ok, maybe. Under the "cup of sugar" type pretext, I'll "lend them" some internet.

Someone who is capable of paying their own damn bill and is looking to stream loads of films off netflix and god knows can **** off.

this really.
