Food Hygiene Scores

Use these ratings (via the Scores on the Door iOS app) all the time, Parents used to work in the food industry many moons back and I know what factors can get you an iffy rating.

If you have the option to go somewhere with a higher score its a no brainer.

On the up side our local kebab place is 5/5, yah! :p

I like to know that a takeaway has a high score but I wouldn't say it'd put me off if it only had say a 3/5 star rating. The quality of the food is the first factor, but if it only had 1 star then I'd almost certainly go elsewhere.

I do IT support for a Restaurant in London and they have a 5/5. It takes a lot to achieve that thus I will not eat at anywhere less than a 4.

I cannot imagine what those with 0 or 1 must be doing.

They mean bugger all, just that someone can tidy up for an inspection.

I can assure you as somebody that has a 5/5 shop they do mean something.
Im proud of my shop, I like to keep it clean, I like to keep the premises in good condition and I like to maintain my equipment to high standard. I don't really like keeping temperature logs but that's part of the job so I do it.
For my customers it shows them that I am clean, hygienic and can handle food and store it properly, it also sets me apart from all those 1/5 dives, like the one you eat from.

I eat at a place with 1, they don't obey a few silly rules logging every little thing so they don't get good marks. It doesn't matter to them though, because anyone in the know, knows the quality of food is awesome, they have a regular following, myself included.

To get 1/5 you have to break more than a "few silly rules".
1/5 means your fridges are cold and that's about it.
Still if you enjoy it, good luck to you. I cant tell you where to eat.
If the food tastes good who cares if its been sat on the worktop all day with flies landing on it? and why should you care there is no soap at the handwash sink in their toilet?

I don't really pay much attention to those, sometimes see them in food places windows, if the place looks dodgy/dirty or the food seemed bad I'd consider not going there again :p

I used to date an EHO and places can be marked down for anything. For example, a place that had a 5 could get lowered to a 4 because of a small crack on the ceiling in the kitchen. Sometimes it comes down to the EHO and how hard they are.

But a place with a sorce of 1, I wouldn't go near to be honest. Some of the stories I heard would make you sick on how some places store their food.

Anything with a 3 and up is fine with me.

It would depend on what was above that small crack and whether any drips / dust / dirt could fall directly onto the food that you are about to be served. It's the same with lights and ledges which often get missed when people clean, they can collect a lot of dust, flies etc.

I discovered it a few years ago and it is really interesting to know what the hygiene scores are for my local take-aways and restaurants. It has certainly influenced my decision on where to get take-aways from.

Just looking at the App for the first time, there is a cafe around the corner which has a score of 0! I'm glad I've had nothing more than coffee from them.

 you didn't have 'milk' in your coffee did you???

More importantly, why aren't they shut down? In the US places get shut down all the time by the health department.

Our local indian takeaway and kebab shop both have 3 stars.

Never had a duff meal from them, and never been ill in 2 years of using them.

Interestingly we have used other takaways in the past in the same area that I recently found out to have 1 star. They didnt make us ill either, but we stopped using them as we didnt rate the quality of the food.
