3770k Installed. Want to check everything looks ok + overclocking tips!

should be fine for 9-9-9-24 timings and 16gb

ram speed/timings doesn't really add much performance anyway

So just to confirm all you did in the BIOS was follow wazza's advice of "maybe use high llc and +0.015v or +0.020v cpu offset and set cpu multi to 45x" and you set the voltage to 1.20v?

If you do mess with speedstep etc please detail it

what board are you using? if asus put cpu v on offset then enter +0.020 offset

if gigabyte set to normal then put dvid to +0.020v

yh,and set cpu v to normal (you'll see it in cpu voltage list) it unlocks dvid for adjustment then,then enter +0.020v its hard to judge the right llc level atm could try high for now then see what load cpu voltage is when you stress cpu and might be able to use medium llc

I leave all power saving on or auto

can also manually set bclk to 100,pwm phase control to extreme performance and vcore voltage response to fast

Well, i have a very old p67 board ( p67a GD53) which was never designed for ivy and i had to do a bios update to even get it to run 22nm cpu's! It also doesnt have LLC and no offset voltage control ( it does have a vdroop option but that is either "auto" or "low vdroop" and that is it).

I am therefore doing it the old fashioned way (but the way that has served me well with my 2500k for the past 2 and a half years) .

I might well be able to get a better overclock with a newer board but its just more money to be honest. If this is stable at 4.5ghz and 1.2v then that is enough for me.

All i did was load optimized defaults. Change RAM to 1600mhz, changed multi to 45, changed vcore in bios to 1.200 and that was it.

One thing that is annoying is that Speedstep isnt working like it did with my 2500k ( i.e. downclocking to 1600mhz when idle). I have EIST enabled in the OC settings but i think some of the other c state stuff has been diabled automatically by my motherboard and i think one of those controls speed step so need to take a look.

I'm too on a p67 board and thats how i overclocked the processor, though my speedstep is still working.

Yeh its odd. Speedstep was working before overclocking. I think one of the power states has disabled itself. Need to check tomorrow.

You need to use offset CPU v for it to work,all power states enabled and balanced windows profile

Dont need to use offset. I cant use offset on my board and i had speedstep working with 2500k

. Though yes, i will need to make sure all the power states are enabled.

How are you finding the new chip with games?

it wont downclock in voltage though with fixed cpu v (only haswell chips can do that)

it will only show cpu speed dropping not voltage

Only tried a bit of ROME 2 on the carthage historical battle so far. Good 30-40% minimum frame hike but that just means it runs at 25-30fps rather than 15-20 fps : /

Will try Battlefield 3 tomorrow. Only had time to prime it for a few hours today before going to work. Now its stable 3 hours in prime i will try some games and other things.

And iirc, with haswell you have to have c states, eist, speedstep enabled, (not auto) and balanced power profile in windows. Another option is to use adaptive voltage. Cant remember if this was available on ivy. The drawback with it is that if running synthetic stress programs it adds on a lot more voltage.

Think i read on here the other day that rome 2 doesnt make use of sli very well, bf3 should show a nice boost though.

Yes i know. Voltage wont drop but at the moment cpu speed wont drop either.

Ok so I got speedstep working.Just had to enable c1e in bios.

However, problems with ram timing. I set my ram to the setting I had with my 2500k. timings at 9,9,9,24 and voltage at 1.53 and the pc froze very soon after starting prime 95.....with timings set to auto (cpuz shows 11,11,11,29) it ran prime 95 for 3 hours earlier with no issue.

Does ram timing affect the cpu overclock that much!? Also, is there really any performance gains with timings set at 9,9,9,24 instead of 11,11,11,29?

try with 1.55v and 1.10v cpu/vtt

if stable try 1.50v dram voltage,and you wont lose much if any performance with looser timings

To be honest though if there is going to be pretty much zero impact on performance I will just keep them at 11,11,11,29.

Maybe I should set the CPU back to stock and see if they can actually run at 9,9,9,24 as that is what they are rated at.

Is the latency being automatically dialled back because I have 4 dimms?

Edit: just doing a bit of reading and that could be correct, the motherboard has to relax timings for 4x dimms compared with 2...

Perhaps I should save up for a higher speed (2133mhz) 2x 8gb kit...
