*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

SLI GTX670 is good performance no doubt, however its low memory bandwidth (because of its narrow 256-bit bus size) would mean you would get much greater performance hit when using settings such as SuperSampling, and playing memory intense titles such as Metro, or...any games that uses high res texture, and this apply for 1920 res, not just higher res.

If I was in your shoes, I would probably do the same in keeping the SLI GTX670, but I'd make do with not using settings like SuperSampling etc. If you not crazy about games like Metro, the SLI GTX670 would still be fine in the short term, and should last you till next gen 20nm upgrade.

512 bit bus effective though with SLI.

After reading some of the reviews it seems

  • Yes it can beat a Titan under certain conditions at a much lower price point.
  • Once the card reaches it's target temperature it will reduce the clock speed to keep it there if it gets too hot.
  • If you push the target temperature too high, the fans need to be pushed up and anything past 50% fan speed is stupidily loud.
These are the major points I have taken from the reviews.

This can be clearly seen on Tom's harware with the bitcoin mining results. Because you are pushing the card hard, 100% for 24/7, temperatures will rise, throttling kicks in and kills performance of mining / cycles. Even if you could push the target temperature, you couldn't stay in the room and keep your hearing and it would still throttle the cycles.

Nice card, awesome price, but need to definately wait for a proper air or water cooling solution to make it manageable.

It is like buying a Ferrari and having the speed reduce proportional to the fuel left in the fuel tank. Very annoying.

Still sticking with my w/c 7990 for the moment.

Oh I know it's memory bandwidth isn't great and if I was gaming above 1080p I would probably go for a 290x.

The guru3d review helpfully has a 690 in the comparison graphs to give me an idea of how the 290 stacks up and unfortunately the 690 is still a lot faster, runs cooler and quiter and even draws less power!

For now I will wait till 20nm I think.

Same reason I will stick with my 7990 for now as well.

Mine was delivered first thing this morning. Only had time for a quick play so nothing much to report other than it is very powerful but runs red hot and is noisy as hell. It topped 92.c in fire strike at stock settings.

Will try and play again later but going to busy most of the day so might not be until late.

I'd like to see Jono overclock those 670's and get some Firestrike+Firestrike Extreme and Valley/Heaven benches up for comparison to some 7950's. ;)

Would that rub your e-peen up the right way if I was to do that? I could get some scores for you if it would really give you a release

Don't like to see you so tense.

Nice to see a comparison is all Jono. The firestrike benchmark threads are completely devoid of 670 SLI results. No need to get tetchy about it.

Sounds like it has the problems the 7970 ghz edition on the stock cooling had. IE gets really hot.

Great card and great price though, but doesn't make me regret my £470 7990. The 7990 uses only 50w more at load and is 40c cooler. It's also still the fastest single PCB card available, and I got a £110 psu for free :D

Been reading TTL's review and frankly for once I think he's opinions are quite valid.
95°c - yes that is stupidly hot ! If you asked any 1 year ago every one would agree on that, but because AMD now "green lights" this temperature it's suddenly ok ?. Not for me, it's still way too hot. I'd say 85°c tops.

Performance on par with GTX 780 ? - yea that is true. It's usually 7~10% faster.

Seems rushed quality wise ? - I suppose this goes with the plastic case and the inadequate cooler. Yes... compared to GTX 780/Titan reference cooler, there's no comparison.

But a bad card ? not at all - and I don't see TTL write this.
So this time, I won't bash TTL's conclusion.
To be honest, in terms of review on the temp...rather than review on card vs card, it feels more like stock cooler vs stock cooler review.

I think most people would much rather paying £430 for the 290x and want wait for partners to release custom cooler (at little to no extra cost), than the 290x with a Titan like cooler and price it at £460+ and set the price point there.

I mean just look at the GTX770 for example...partners cards with custom cooler was priced at around £320-£330, and for the Nvidia card with a "reference Titan cooler", they were asking for like £360 for it. We've also seen partner's GTX780 with custom coolers deals at £470-£480, then the "stock cooler" GTX780 are still £500+ on average.

Comparing temp performance with no regard to the extra cost for the better "reference cooler" seems rather silly.

only thing i agree with him on is temps like you say 95c is too hot and i think AMD took the wrong direction tackling temps, they should have improved the cooler to compensate rather than letting it get that hot in the first place. the design of the cooler externally makes no difference to me i'm still using a ref 6970 and i've had no issue with its looks. Personally i'm going to upgrade my case and cooling solution soon to wc, so hopefully once under water the 290x will be able to stretch it's legs (now if only i could afford a 4K monitor)

What everyone seems to miss is that when it gets too hot, it throttles. The only way to mitigate against this is up the temp target and to wear earplugs and even then it will still throttle. I for one could not live with that, Like having a gorgeous wife and not being aloud to touch.

:D tee hee. Don't be coy. We both know overcloked 7950's will be faster than overcloked 670's, especially in those benchmarks.

Its not as loud as the 7970 reference but its not far off. The auto fan profile is not very good it seems to ramp the fan right up rather quick so it could be better with a custom profile...

Agreed. If I were to get a 290X I'd wait for other 3party coolers to be mounted.

isnt there already an oc tech labs version up on the listings could have sworn i saw one

nope my mistake its just a regular OCUK version, mind you great price on it.
