Pulling my hair out

OK any advice would be much appreciated. Tired and eager to try my R9 290x I did just about everything wrong but am completely stumped!

Current situation is my brand new card won't even allow boot to bios. The sequence of events is something like this but with more card swapping:

1. Forgot to uninstall drivers. Removed old 6950.
2. Installed 290x and booted to windows fine.
3. Uninstalled catalyst
4. Realised my BD drive was disconnected so couldn't use installation cd.
5. Installed 13.11beta3. Ooops. Would not reboot.
6. Swapped out 290x for 6950. Booted.
7. Cleaned system of AMD drivers.
8. Cleared BIOS
9. 290x still not getting to BIOS
10. Booted with 6950 and installed catalyst from 290x installation cd. 290x will still not allow system to boot.

I've also tried more than one slot as well as uber and quiet modes. The card shows no light but fan is working slowly. At one stage the 290x fan went mental.

The 6950 is still working fine but I'm loosing the plot! PSU is revolution 85 and is sold as a rock.

HELP!!!
