Still trying to figure my head around their Character Slot mechanic...
They talk about buying ($15) extra slots from the pledge shop, but what about when the final game is released?
Do new players starting out only ever get one slot? Do you have to buy more, for real money?

I would guess (?) that once you own the base game you can then purchase additional slots at a cheaper price than the game itself... I hope so anyway... I'd also hazard a guess that you must by the game before you can do anything otherwise why would you if you could get a $15 character and then someone to 'gift' you a ship.

Got my answer...
You buy one copy of the game. That gives you one character. You can then buy further slots for Alts. So yeah, you were right.

Not quite what I was expecting when they said, 'all you buy is the game and then everything else is bought with the in-game credits you earn' - I was expecting perhaps a Freelancer style allocation of Alt slots, or something... but they justify this by saying that Alt purchases pay for DLC, add-ons, future expansion et al. I'm OK with that, so long as I have the option. At $15, I guess it's not exactly much either.

I wonder if there'll be other 'revealed' charges for stuff, or if there'll be something like subscriptions for newsletters, official fiction, etc?
No pay to win/pay to play but things beyond just the usual boring merchandising t-shirts and baseball caps...

I'm quite surprised by that too ttaskmaster, I was under the same impression as you.

$15 isn't a lot, but if you want the same number of characters as say most MMOs then the cost will rack up pretty quickly.

Given that I've never played more than one character in any MMO I'm not bothered by this. It's a personal choice in the end as to whether you're willing to spend the money on another character. It's not exactly a hidden cost, just an optional extra. Just look at starcraft 2, if you want more than one account you must buy the entire game and expansions twice which comes to around £50 depending on where you buy from.

Charging for additional fiction/newsletters would also be fine, I don't need those to play the game. I'm sure they'll get a lot of money from people buying in game credits though. That should more than pay for future DLC's and server maintenance for several years.

CR basically says that most non-subscription MMOs only give you one character anyway. I suppose that's right, given that the one modern MMO I know anything about is free to play and does only give you one character.
I've not yet played WoW, EVE or anything like that.

Those where you can have loads of chars are apparently all pay-to-play and offer further real purchases for in-game stuff, together with other buyables which all funds their server maintenance, add-ons, etc.
Star Citizen will not have that same level of revenue, but someone mentioned (either here or the official forum) that if the current 250,000 pledgers all pay $5 just once for something like a custom ship skin... that gives RSI $1.2mil. $15 for one extra char slot each is 3.75mil.

They'll probably get about $90 off me alone, as I like distinct multi-char roleplay accounts.

It's not exactly a hidden cost, just an optional extra.
But it wasn't really mentioned in the beginning either and as someone who doesn't really play MMOs, it's not something I would neccesarily know to expect.
I'm not that bothered by it... not nearly as much as *some* people on the RSI forum, anyway... it just wasn't what I understood from all the sales pitch video interviews.

I'm sure they'll get a lot of money from people buying in game credits though. That should more than pay for future DLC's and server maintenance for several years.
Will you still be limited to 150k UEC in game, or can you have as much as you like so long as you pay for it?
I thought there would be a mechanic preventing things like a bunch of real-world rich people just buying all the credits, buying a fleet of Capships and then dominating the entirety of space?

I hope so some people in eve spend stupid money for their alliances/corps to win wars

I cant see the point of alt characters in an MMO without levelling? and if there is levelling, im going to have a fit.

Remember, it's more of a persistent universe, and your reputation/trade is linked to your character.

You may want to have a pirate, and a well respected trader. You probably wouldn't combine the two. Or, you may just want to roleplay two different characters!

As far as the likes of Freelancer go, most of that was geared around having different reps, different ship loadouts and so on.

Despite being more open and lacking classes/levels/etc, I think a lot of peoples' mindsets will still pigeon-hole themselves into one thing.
With that in mind, it's much more playable with the ability to just log-in to whichever one I felt like that day, rather than having to go through hours of changing rep around, bribing people, doing missions and repurchasing all the different kit from bases scattered across the galaxy.

From a purely character-centric perspective, I can have several books on the go at once and switch between which one I read at any one time. I can do the same with my tabletop RPGs, so why not with the stories of my game characters.
There's a point where full immersion is wicked fun... and there's a point where the game just becomes hours of hassle. Immerse me all you like, but it's still a game and still needs to be fun.

Obviously this multi-char system will be open to the professional griefer-types who simply F1 into different characters stationed at various points all along the main paths just for hassling people, but it also allows the hassled to switch out and still be able to play.
Instancing will further limit the ability to grief, but I've met some seriously ingenious griefers and game-breakers who find workarounds for every mechanic you can throw at them.

Hmm true! I suppose you share your ships though? Wonder how that would work.

I'll probably be fine with one character, not got the time to play more than that these days :D

No leveling but I know a couple of people who are likely going to have a good character and a "bad" one.

There will be UEC purchases for real money available but it is capped as to prevent what you have said above.

There are a lot of questions repeatedly coming up in this thread that have all been answered numerous times on the Wingman's Hanger weekly YouTube videos made by the devs. You should all watch them.

I am working my way through them, but 42 hour-long episodes takes a lot of evenings!! :D

+1 for dedication lol

Re the 1 slot issue.

Since SC is based around character legacy and reputation it makes sense to primarily have 1 character, obviously they added in the option to buy in slots for a small amount or you could buy another game package if your insane enough to allow for those who do want more than 1 character which I think was about 30ish % when they did a poll.
