Really confused by this, I left my previous employment on the 19th of September. I only worked there for 5 or so weeks and they pay the month in advance so I got the whole pay packet for September plus the days I worked from the previous month. (worked it out to be about 6 shifts)

So, I basically owe them money as they paid me for shifts I didn't work. However, they paid me today for the whole month of October when I haven't been working there. :p

I don't need the money so I've just put it in my savings account as I know I'm going to have to pay it back unless their payroll is as useless as their training program. (They even posted me the wage slip so they know I'm not working there )

I've been talking to a few friends in relation to it, two of them advised me of a law when you can choose to pay back the amount monthly for whatever you can afford, is this true? I can't find much information anywhere in relation to this online so not sure if this is still in place.

I'd probably just pay it all back in one go anyway but just seeing if anyone can shed any light really. :)

Write a letter to the Payroll department, send recorded delivery. Await response explaining situation, could be that they meant to do it or they could ask for it back.

Either way, you get to soak up a few pennies interest from the money whilst you wait for a response.

If they're as useless as you say they are, that could be a nice nest egg in the decades to come. :D

Why write to them, it's not like they are a bank and can take it out at will without your consent. Just leave it resting in your account for a year. If they don't claim it, you got yourself a bonus.

Move it to another account, dont touch it, see what happens, I am not saying this is the right thing to do, but just wait for them

Unfortunately I did work for a bank and they took all the money I 'owed' them out in one go! :(

Writing and sending via recorded delivery was to a) ensure it was received and b) so it takes as long as possible. Given that the error is in the OP's favour, and the company he's dealing with have a reputation for being utterly terrible why would you want to rush things, or make it any easier for them? :)

But if you do write to them what's the chance they'll be organised enough to work out how to reply. Plus if 2-3 years down the line they do work out their mistake and get in contact then you can say "well, I did try to tell you".

I was in this position years ago when I left an employer. They paid me twice after i had left.

I never did anything and kept the money. Just keep the money until your confident its been enough time for them not to ask for it back.

Well, they are a bank. :p

Yeah I'm not gonna write to them, their slip up not mine.

Ah I only semi-skimmed the OP. Trying to watch the fat.

I guess you should just let them know then.

But it might be normal for banks. You're all a bunch of fat cats pocketing money thats not yours. :D:p:p:p

Write them a letter saying only "Thanks", send it recorded delivery.

When they come and ask for it back say.. i contacted you to tell you and got no reply ;)
Heres who signed for it :)

I'd keep it in an account that you dont touch and can easily pay back.
You may find the person that discovers the issue was the one at fault and may try to cover their tracks by simply stopping the payment and saying nothing :)

I'd just leave it to one side and wait for them to contact you.

My last employer paid me my accrued holiday twice, kept quiet and never heard from them.

Generally it'll come to light at either year end or the financial year end. If you haven't heard by then you're probably safe. Depends how much it is and if it's significant enough for them to chase you and reclaim.

I don't work for a bank anymore. :p I hated it, they were shoddy.

So for now it's just going to sit in the savings account then, it's about £1300, plus the shifts I shouldn't have been paid for so equates to around £1700 or so, it's not a tiny amount but not sure it's big enough for a huge bank to notice.

You'd have thought with them being a bank they'd be pretty good with their finances. :p
