Radeon R9-290X Crossfire vs GeForce GTX 780 SLI review 1440p & 4k

^^ I'm talking stock cooling v stock cooling - once you start putting volt mods and aftermarket cooling into the question you've got people hitting what ~40% overclocks over the reference boost clock on the GTX780? - 1200MHz _so far_ seems to the top end of whats attainable of the 290X on stock not the average though that might change as more get into people's hands.

Pretty sure 780/Titan will need to be higher clocked on the core to compete vs a 290X. That's how it was with the 680/7970 anyway. Time will tell i guess.

I think it's to early to say how the r9 290x will overclock but with Gibbo reaching 1200 without artifacts and some runs at 1250 with then it's looking like the core's are in line with release 7970's. At launch the gtx780 was overclocking about the same so it's a waiting game for better model's to appear and for programs like ab to support the cards.

The first Multi gpu review and it is a comfortable and flawless victory for the 290x crossfire setup. Guru3d went easy by disabling TressFX on Tomb Raider and using DDOF on Bioshock.

Just updated these results with my own 290Xs.

System used was identical to the one used for my Titans except I was using a 3970X @4.6 instead of a 3930K @4.6 (they perform the same).

Could not do a Tomb Raider run as I could not get my screen to run @1440p with AMD Catalyst Control Centre.

There are some interesting results on my own 290Xs above running them at stock in Uber mode.

Absolutely fantastic work there Kaapstad  a lot of work gone into that.

What is your take on these cards?? do you have an open case?

I like them

I am running with an open case for the benches as I forgot to put the side panel on. With the cards fans turned up the cards don't get that hot for benching. I am using a RIVE mobo with a gap between the cards which helps. I think the way to go is waterblocks and hopefully soon I will have mine fitted.

Is the noise as bad as some are saying?

If the fans are at 100% it is like having a vacuum cleaner in the room. For normal use the cards are not too bad. The good news is two in CF don't sound any louder than one.:D

I think a lot of people who buy these will be using water anyway. I also think with 1.4v or more available in GPU Tweak there is little point in getting a non ref one for watercooling.

Its normally hard to argue with Kaap's two cents, tbh. :)

Unless hes benching BF4. :p :D :p
