BMW and M Power Owners

I disagree, the difference will be negligible. UHP winter tyres like ContiWinterContacts will be excellent regardless of width.

I'd personally go with the staggered set as it will provide more traction on cold, damp roads, which is a much more likely scenario. £100 is peanuts when you're buying 4x 18" winters.

Why does the vehicle manufacturer recommend 4 identically sized tyres for winter use then? Do they just do it for a laugh?

Wider tyres are worse in snow. Wider doesn't always equal more grip either

Yeah I would imagine they'll keep the looks of the line up in sync.

I'm getting quite tempted by an old shape 135i coupe actually ( though the convertible seems more readily available and most are hilariously expensive) might have a look at them next year when the boss's car is paid

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will stick with the BMW setup, 4x(18x8) all the same size.

Fox, I think you need to try a car fitted with full on winters to see exactly how good they are in the cold, wet and snow!

I don't really - because my car with UHP tyres is never anything other than excellent in the cold and wet and it rarely snows. But don't worry, I'll be experiencing both this winter:

Either the bottom ****ing ccv hose isnt in quite rightor ( more likely) oil filter housing seal has given up so the block is covered....and I can't be bothered to strip it today. Mist fix before the real cold sets in

Why not go for the cab? Last of the line, great colour combination and full spec. It's not exactly cheap but it's not overpriced IMO.

Am I crazy for considering a 6 series to do ~20k a year in? Seem to be a fair few about for £10k.

rodenal, I swear I saw a post by yourself stating that you've been looking into these but I can't find it.

I'm guessing they're quite complex machines? Or are they fairly reasonable for a competent mech to tinker with? Are they likely to throw up big bills (other than consumables)?

The only looking into them I really done was to go...oh they're cheap, then thought about the cost of the car new and how likely it would be that it eould be very, very easy to encounter regular 4 figure bills and counted myself out. I don't know exactly how much of its internal Gubbins are shared with the e60 but that was hardly BMW's finest hour, particularly electrically

I'm not going to pretend that's an informed opinion though, they certainly are an interesting car that would swallow 20k per year effortlessly. I've only driven a convertible, was lovely ( but this was many moons ago and it was quite new)

The N52 engined 630i will at least be solid enough from an engine perspective and should do 30's on the Motorway. Not sure I could be bothered with the hassle of an old German car if I needed to do proper miles, mind.

In terms of suitability if we ignore the costs, it was pretty much designed exactly for that sort of thing.

This is the crux of the matter. Currently drive an old Japanese car and it's very simple in comparison to the 6 series and it's very reliable too. I'm hesitant to change as I'm paranoid that unless I go for something newer (and end up spending £15k+) then I'll be stuck with getting something either boring (so no real point in changing from the current car) or likely to throw up bills.

Any ideas as to where the best place to go to read/speak to current 6 series owners online is?

I can live with 30s on the motorway but can't live with there being a high chance of it breaking down and leaving me stranded - obviously any car can do this.

Might be better just to wait a year or so and up the budget to £15k or get an ST220/Ghia, the latter of those being a rather boring option.

Do BMW make available old brochures on line? I've found VW let you download previous editions.

I'm looking at some F30s from 2012 and wondered if much had changed since then. This article suggests an upgrade this year, so I'm wondering if Pro MM on an F30 from March / April 2012 would be "missing" much? For instance the Real Time Traffic sounds good.
