Moving To England And Need Advice

I think people saying why move to England it sux lol, honestly have no idea how good they really have it living in the UK.

I think it really depends what kind of lifestyle you want. I have travelled a fair bit and there are many places I would rather live that suit me a lot better. Eg. Brazil suited me perfectly, just a shame things didnt work out with the ex otherwise I would have moved there at some point Im sure :p

If you want to keep your US passport not only will you be paying tax here in the UK but you'll also have to pay tax in the US. Majority of people that have to work for any long period of time around the world, unless they're super rich, normally relinquish their US citizenship.

That's not true, the UK and USA have a double taxation treaty.

A lot of tech companies are based outside of cities, increasingly it's more economical to base companies in business parks out of town.

London will have the highest salary but extra earnings are quickly diminished by having to live in London.

You'll be expected to slave and slave and slave and be underpaid and under appreciated but that's just deregulation for you, it's allowed employers to treat workers like dogs. My advice is try get in a place with strong unionisation.

Don't do it - the UK is full of people that hate where they live, hate the people that live there, hate the people that move there, complain bitterly about whether it's too cold, too warm, too dark, too boring, too anything.

Move to Australia.

While London does have the higher paid salaries, you also pay through the nose for actually living. Buying/Renting a house, food, drink etc etc. Generally everything is more expensive.

My missus lived and worked in London for a year, and hated every second of it. I worked there every weekend for a good 18 months too, I also share her opinion. She hardly ever heard an English person speak to/from work. I think Americans tend to idolise London for its 'English culture'. But I actually find its quite the opposite.

In this day and age IT is literally everywhere. To be in IT you don't have to work for the likes of IBM, HP, DELL etc... I work Sys Admin for a Law firm in Birmingham, all in house IT Support (which in my opinion is better than having to deal with Joe Bloggs public). Literally every company has an IT Department, or relies on outsourcing their IT to a solutions company so you shouldn't have a problem finding a job.

While England does have its fair few nice quaint little towns. Any city is very much the same, Just lower paid, and lower cost of living.

Cornwall is a very nice place, a lot of people actually go to Cornwall for holidays within the UK, as they generally get the nicest weather, lots to do and friendly people (everytime I've been). We have some family friends that moved down there from the Midlands and they love it there.

One rule with the Brits is you have to moan about the weather.
When its raining for a couple of days - "For god sake I'm fed up of this rain"
When its hot and sunny - "I can't bear this heat any longer, I wish it would rain"
When its just a standard cloudy day - "well the weather is a bit gloomy! I wish it was sunny!"

Also, must be good at standing in queues.

You are now ready to be British!

Cornwall is pretty much like that. Birmingham might come as a shock to you...

Indeed, Birmingham is like London, but smaller and cheaper.

Ive been to Birmingham once!

Once ;) - Seems you learnt your lesson!

Don't come to Birmingham.

While its not the nicest of cities, there is plenty to do and lots of job opportunities here.
Living in the suburbs of Birmingham is actually really really nice. House prices are quite low, and cost of living isn't through the roof!

If you are ever in Birmingham let me know as we're currently a man down in terms of a Sys Admin :)

Birmingham is a total dump IMO - OP would be much better off moving to Manchester, which is now the UK's 2nd city. The current amount of investment going into this place from tech companies is massive, they are literally transforming the area.

Good links to all major motorways, reasonable house prices and cost of living, plenty to do, plenty of places to work with an IT skills shortage.

LOL manchester is hardly an inspiring suggestion. A sodden dump full of scallies.

I told you - the English hate their own country... hell if they hate it then someone that moves there is never going to love it. The only reason Aussies, Kiwis and Saffers move there is that it's a decent launchpad into Europe. No-one actually likes the UK.

We'd like it that little bit more if all the aussies left so feel free to fly straight to Paris and miss us out comletely.:)

The same thing can be said for the majority of cities in the world, nevermind just this country ^^

Come on, there are plenty of places better than Manchester to choose from.

I was a student there for three years and whilst the nightlife is great as a student there is nothing else going for it, unless you like dreary weather (the pennines rainshadow makes it the wettest city in the uk), muggings and 'that' accent (shudder) :(

Yeah - I'm not an Australian ;) And I lived in London for 7 years so I'm speaking from experience.

I lived in Oz for a year. Sydney is great to visit, but to live its overrated and super expensive.
Perth is your best bet in Oz, the most european friendly, high QOL, but still. Oz is great in many ways but it isn't the paradise you paint it to be.

Afraid I can't give much good advice with the working in IT side but welcome to the forums (if you decide to stay) and welcome to the country (if you decide to move).

Don't listen to that majority of the naysayers, it's really not as bad as people make out, people just like to moan :p Visit a bit first though if possible.

I haven't painted it to be anything of the sort :D Just a nicer place to live than the UK.
