*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Brilliant- now Sony have admitted that vita remote play basically won't work properly, just like the PS3 remote play.

The statement put out suggests the PS4 must be connected via Ethernet and the vita be within close proximity in order to successfully use remote play.

So it'll undoubtedly be a jerk fest that you can only use in your home now. I'm sure they were originally suggesting it's be available on the move and work perfectly etc.

I thought that was a given, I certainly never expected to be able to remote play games while out and about or even at the office or someone else's house.

They came out of the gates suggesting it would work over 3G, mentioned nothing about the PS4 needing a permanent ethernet connection, and that games would work perfectly.

It'll be slow and laggy and nigh on useless - I'm certain of that.

I've never seen anything from Sony suggesting this was a 3G thing, always thought it was Wifi and that looks to be the case.

Maybe some people assumed otherwise?

Wait people thought remote play would work over 3G?. Yet weve had discussions about how things like Onlive and Gaikai cant cope with how poor the internet backbone is for home broadband connections, yet somehow magically 3G would somehow work.

Really are people just that dull not to piece together reasonable conclusions...

How much bandwidth do you think PS4 streaming would use? :O

Seriously it's deluded to think that much data could a) go over a 3G network and b) not destroy average data allowance after 20 minutes of playtime

but I liek the idea of turning my ps4 on in the front room and escaping with the vita to play in peace

Never expected for one moment PS4 remote play would work over 3G, crazy

Even with the PS3 playing something like Ico on the Vita, you need a relatively decent local wi-fi connection or it can drop out.

I always just assumed it would be very limited anyway because there are no trigger, just top buttons.

Typically 2 areas of the rear touchpad on the Vita are allocated for the "missing" buttons of the DS pad.

It's not even really a wifi feature if you can't have your PS4 unplugged... Wonder why it's not a wifi direct style connection?
Actually thats a good question, I presume Sony is already in bed with BT and so happy to continue with it. TBH I dont really know the pros/cons of BT 2.1/4 with Wifi Direct - we havent really seen implementations of it outside of controllers.

Perhaps the Vita doesnt even support Wifi Direct which would have made Remote Play using it a moot point

RE: Having the PS4 connected by Ethernet is just a recommendation, seems a sensible one where you can accomodate it...

Yeah, I never expected it to work outside of the home either. I can't imagine a situation where I'd want to either, as it seems like a perfect home solution rather than a mobile one.

I still expect it to work out of the home via the internet, just not over 3g.

So for example I could go to a friends house with a Vita and load up my PS4 game there while connected to his Wifi. That's always what i thought the idea was anyway.

Its more than capable to be used over a WAN, but ultimately its your internet upload that youll need to ensure is good enough - not sure how a console designer could ensure its working in multiple scenarios without controlling them and I just dont see Sony becoming an ISP :p
