*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

This is a thread for people who have pre-ordered a £400 (including a game) console, that has next to no exclusive games for it, and frankly apart from the fact of having a 'next-gen' console on release day, it's not that great of an investment.

Therefore, it is fair to say that the majority of us have a high disposable income, and as a result will mostly likely have a new(ish) display upon which to view the glory of 'next gen'.

I shall enjoy playing games on my PS4, through my 50 inch Samsung tv, that I can also plug my USB hard drives into, or stream from my PC to :)

That's nice, I have a 2010 model Bravia but the PS3 is still a superior media player as well as being connected to my AV receiver directly, ergo I get 5.1 audio. The idea that all PS4 owners will already own Blu-ray/media streaming equipment is beyond ludicrous really.

Went for PS4 in the end managed to get it on release day with Killzone game bundle, also as I work for Amazon I get money of so will give me a PS4 and Killzone for £315 bargain.

Question:

Regarding the lack of MP3 support and External HDD support...

I currently have my console linked to my home cinema system. Now that 70% of what my console is used for is removed for PS4, do many home cinema systems have the option to plug in 2x Optical Cables then switch between them via remote?

I have a good home cinema system, but for the PS4 (and combined move to new house), I'm buying a new 55" Smart TV and new home cinema system.
Haven't begun my search yet but wondered if it was something they had.

Could really do without changing the lead 10x a day between PS4 and TV.

Not a big deal but prefer to have setups that can just stay as they are

Make sure you get a proper AV receiver if you're upgrading, not one of these LG/Panasonic/Samsung all-in-one-but-does-everything-badly systems, you get far more inputs, far more settings and far more control over what your inputs do, what audio output settings each one uses etc.

You won't need an optical cable going from your TV, simply having it connected via HDMI to the receiver should provide audio back from the TV to the receiver (and thus the speakers). Your PS4 would also be connected to the receiver via HDMI rather than optical if you want the absolute best audio quality possible.

Most home cinema amps have multi optical inputs, as an alternative however you can buy a switch. I use an optical switch for my Astro Headset and just switch between the devices with the remote.

Cool, nice to know. My current one was bought some years ago now and only has 1 port so wans't sure if it's something they had. But yeah guess a switch is an option if not. Don't want to buy one with 2 slots if it's not the best one available for the price if i can just grab a switch

Some info on the mp3 situation....

"we were able to speak to a Sony rep today about if any of these features could be implemented in the near future and much to our surprise we have received a “Yes“. The future update that is in process to be rolled out shortly after the PS4′s launch(November 15th) will include the following detailed features listed below:

Legacy headset support
Mp3 support for not only in-game but non gaming as well.
Suspend and resume play feature

All of these features are set to hit PS4′s consoles by late 2013- to early 2014. Which we hope Sony will deliver sooner upon. From what we know these features are being packed in the 2nd forth coming PS4 firmware update. Also these details were hinted today when Shuhei Yoshida made a post on twitter stating that he had a discussion with other PlayStation 4 development team members about received feedback. With this news being provided Those these features are a definite step in the right direction. We were still unable to confirm future external hard drive support for media or game data would be supported later on. lastly we’re still waiting to hear if there will be future YouTube support for video sharing. What do you think of this good news do you think Sony still needs more features to claim the living room in this next gen console war? comment below let us know."

Wii U Has More Next-Gen 1080p 60fps Games Than Xbox One, PS4

But anyway, many people consider it not to be 'next gen' as it is underpowered compared to PS4 and Xbone (and more on par with last gen PS3 and 360). But then Nintendo's consoles are generally behind in terms of computing power. Just look at the Wii.

It's because people don't understand what generation means. For some reason they've linked it with available processing power.

It's like saying you're not a new generation because your dad's stronger than you, it makes no sense.

I agree with this. Everyone who's pre-ordered an Xbox One has done so knowing that it is the weaker of the two consoles and will likely have weaker performance in some games. Some people still seem determined to point it out every chance they get though.

I'm curious to how these people would respond to "But the games I want are only coming out on Xbox, how is the performance difference relevant in that case?".

I'm only interested in getting a PS4 for the same reasons as above, Playstation games are what have my interested, any Xbox exclusives I've had any interest in have came out on PC anyway, and then for multi platform stuff I have my PC.

Thanks for the info. Will take note of that.
I usually look into all this stuff but been so busy lately I haven't had barely an hour spare in weeks and suddenly the move could be going through very soon so I need stuff ASAP. Feel so un-prepared as I'm normally OTT with the details and prep

Before you buy it'd be worth making a thread in the Home Cinema sub-forum on here, plenty of knowledgeable people that can recommend you the best kit for your money.

Good idea. Forgot there was a thread for that too.

I'll do that over the weekend. Got a hell of a lot of numbers to crunch today/tomorrow first for mortgages, renting out properties etc...(yawn) then I'll know what I'm doing 100%

But to me, sound quality is more important than visual quality so it's very important I have the best possible system for what is still a somewhat reasonable price. I don't like to pay a LOT more for minor increases.

So I'm sure people in there will be able to advise of the best products to look at.

A quote from somebody called GopherD on Neogaf.

Dont. Set them free. Allow yourself to dream a little. New generations, greater power, more freedom for devs.

14 days.

New genres, revived franchises, spectacular open world masterpieces, scifi epic ship to ship battles, pirates, ninjas, lootwhoring, chickens in radiation suits, point and clicks, music to set your heart aflame, BASE jumping in Nepal, capturing all your flags, angels and demons losing their minds, and a boy, his friends, memories and tears?

One things for sure, there is nothing like the start of a new gen.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you goooooo

I don't know who he is but people on there seem to be saying he has had correct info before. hmmm

I've read that 3 times and he's not actually saying anything of use. Am I missing something?

Apparently something big is going to be announced on the 14th basically, his post was a response to somebody saying they are not getting their hopes up for anything decent, he is saying we SHOULD be getting our hopes up :p
