I'm not sure of the purpose of MKV anyway, most of the time it's just used for a container for MPEG encoded video and audio with maybe some subtitles. MP4 does the same job anyway.

Of course, it's just one of those things, convenience, and since most stuff comes as MKVs people want Playstations to support them.
 
Well that's just ****ing ridicules and will ultimately spoil my gaming experience and to express my disappointment in Sony I'm buy a Wii U on the 29th. :mad:

Most *pirated* things :) My Android and iOS devices don't support it either so it's not a big deal. I just lob them through handbrake to turn into MP4/M4V anyway.

It doesn't have to be, it's a popular standard. A lot of media is presented in that format, and a lot of people choose to rip their own media collections to that format too.

I just don't get why you would rip to that format? It doesn't work on most devices, is a pain on Windows and OSX and isn't any better than mp4 (WE ARE GOING OFFTOPIC HERE)

I wouldn't say "most devices" is correct, MKVs work on my Android phones and tablets easily enough, and on my computers. Depending on what content you have that has subtitles or multiple audio tracks, then MKVs can be the better choice.

My android devices support it just fine, and it's the container of choice for my own rips. It's not just pirates who use mkv:o

They cause VLC to launch on OSX, don't generate thumbnails on Windows, need a third part player on Android 4.3 and iOS doesn't like them at all.

All of that would be cool if MP4 couldn't hold a few audio and subtitle tracks, but it can.

The only issue with MKV is it's MORE versatile than MP4. Which in essence is its reason for not being used on certain devices by default. Open source means it's ever evolving and more optimizable\configurable.

I suppose that can be an issue with standardisation though.
 
I'm getting worried about my pre-order on amazon. I still have no expected ship date, does everybody else already have a date there?

I don't have an expected ship date. I have a delivery estimate of 29th November, which was changed back 48hours after the mess up when you changed your payment method.
 
Mine's still saying the 29th though I ordered mid-august which from what I've read means it may not be a sure fire bet for getting a release day console.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.
