AMD's Revolutionary Mantle Graphics API Adopted by Industry Leading Game Developers Cloud Imperium,

Yep, very little chance of Mantle working on Nvidia hardware, least of all well.

It's no fair. I want Mantle. Why can't we have Mantle on Nvidia? AMD need to play fair. I'm going to cast a vote on change.org.

Sound familiar? lol ;)

I always wanted PhysX Reason I not played Borderlands 2 is because how poor it looks without PhysX.. In the Idea world all tech should be allowed on all hardware, but sadly this will never happen.

last I checked mantle isn't locked out for NVidia, unlike PhysX...enough said.

AMD say no.

Lies!

Lets nip this one in the bud before it starts.

Once SteamOS launched Windows would have been up **** creek if it weren't for AMD with Mantle, AMD can do Mantle using OpenGL extensions but instead of getting behind Linux/OpenGL they're trying to push/monopolise Windows gaming.

AMD monopolise windows gaming? Where on earth did you get that from? Do you think theres going to a rush of people selling 7** nvidia cards just because of Mantle? It didn't happen with nvidia and physx and i see no signs of people waiting to have a mass exodus when Mantle goes live in december for bf4. Also I doubt very much that steamos will kill windows off (Mantle or not). At best it will get its own market share and in many instances it will be dual boot with windows not instead of.

Hmm, I don't think that's definitive, the question and answer are too brief. We'll know for certain after the developer conference. If the API is openly available (which doesn't mean open source), it could be ported to other architectures, even if only using a translation layer.

Which part of:

So not only is MANTLE AMD specific, it's also architecture specific, so it's only compatible with Graphics Core Next (GCN) based products, that's the 7000 series and up for discrete graphics, Kaveri & later for APUs.

Isn't definitive? unless you think Nvidia are going to start licencing GCN and making GCN GPU's in order to use Mantle. Which is double laughable as game developers say that Nvidia's low level OGL extensions give the same performance as AMD are touting for Mantle anyway...

Try reading above in the post by ltmatt.

Mantle could be a real game changer, still could be tempted to move to a non ref 290X over the GTX 780ti, purely because Mantle looks like it could be epic for PC gaming.. I wish we could have previews before the December unveil...

You already get 60 FPS max settings, all games, all resolutions though. Seems like a bit of a daft thing to do to sidegrade when you already have impeccable performance.

Well I am missing where it says that Mantle is open for Nvidia users or even hinting at Nvidia users.

Did you know that PhysX was offered to AMD?

:D

But tis true. Do I want 80 fps (Nvidia) or do I want 104 fps (30% being claimed by some that Mantle will bring in performance). I so can't wait till January when Mantle is released for BF4 and see the performance increses it brings.

That could be about the current implementation only. The API may be broader than that, it may be extended, etc. That's far too little information to base anything concrete on.

John Carmack: Nvidia's OpenGL extensions give similar improvements to AMD's Mantle

Happy days for OpenGL :)

Very true Greg. :)

When you stop for a moment and think about the possibilities with OpenGL. All those amazing games like...

+1.

And when it comes to mantle the simple fact is NVidia wouldn't use it anyway because its not theirs regardless of how accommodating it was for their gpu's.

Mantle, Physx, DX, SteamOS with OpenGL...

Not really a fan of multiple API's. Wish we had one standard tbh, but obviously AMD / Nvidia think their is more money to be made this way, segregating the market..

Oh well, non ref 290X or GTX 780ti... ?

I prefer the Nvidia Hardware, but Mantle...

Hmm..

I like to have the latest and greatest, it's as simple as that :D. Always wanting a better single GPU, whether it be AMD or Nvidia. Same with CPU's. Nothing wrong with wanting more performance is their? Give me overkill lol.

I'm also interested if Mantle will bring visual improvements as well as fps..

We are open to many possibilities with Mantle. We are open to being open; we are open to being standard. How it evolves if our competitor approaches us and says "we want to be compatible with Mantle" ? ... That's a conversation we are not going to shut down.

Honestly mate, we don't want Physx. I'd rather see TressFX or something similar because both sides can use it so it has the potential to be adopted more frequently in future games as one side won't be locked out. Hopefully this will encourage its use more. The performance hit of TressFX is not too bad either, judging by Tomb Raider. Will have to wait and see what its like in other games.
