With the shock of todays 290p pricing and gibbo saying nvidia wouldn't be doing another price drop any time soon I find my self in a tough situation :(

At the moment I have a 780 phantom glh, a lovely card but I've been waiting on blocks for an absolute age, so I realistically have two options going forward...another phantom and wait on blocks, or...go to a pair of 290 pro's and have blocks ready waiting.

Going sli and buying blocks is going to set me back ~£600

A pair of 290's with blocks and factoring in the sale of my current card will cost me ~£530

Then naturally I have to factor in 3dvision or mantle and the usual other things.

I just can't make my mind up so I'm turning to you chaps to try guide me and point out the important parts :)

Both cards offer similar performance and incentives for each camp are fairly even tbh, games, stuff like Mantle, Physx..

The one thing that might tip it towards Nvidia would be not having to sell your current card. A lot less hassle just to add another card, and avoid any potential probs that could arrive in selling to someone. If you know the person your selling to that wouldn't apply though.

Apart from that, either option is decent..

After reading up about the amd's The only negative comments were about heat but knowing your project has watercooling then there isn't any issues!

I suppose it's down to impatience lol

You'd have to be crackers to change from a phantom 780 GLH to a 290(x), pointless - all 3 cards have roughly equal performance when overclocked.

He want to go SLI or Crossfire.

I say sell thew 780 and go Crossfire, may be a bit of effort but overall best performance per price in that price bracket.

Bin the 780 and grab 2x290 Pro's. Come back to the darkside and bring Whyscotty with you please. :)

This.

If water is where you want to go and there's no eta on blocks for your nv card then 290 would be my choice. I get the feeling you would have more fun with the 290's and water than waiting around for the 780 blocks to arrive. Testing out mantle might be appealing as well. I take it 3d on amd would be a no go for you?

Lose 3DVision and go with a pair of 290's Paul. 780's are at a great price but the 290's price is pretty damn good.

290 crossfire under water will be fun to play with and since you don't have to worry about the complaints of the cards (heat and noise) i would say switch colours

I have thought about it some more and come up with.

Don't be daft! Hold onto the 780 till 20nm and then upgrade. Anything else on 28nm is just silly and you know it.

Thanks for all the input fellas, in the last two hours I've changed my mind about 10 times :p

This has hit me the most and made the most sense to me:

Will play the waiting game, at least until the weekend and see how everything looks then :)

Sounds pointless to me especially as they're all likely to be similar speed when they're clocked up. If you've already got a good clocking 780 as well...
