[serious] - got burgled last week

just got a text from the landlord saying my rent hasn't gone through.
um yes, because I am not staying there for now as I WAS BURGLED!!!!! I had to stop the rent and council tax (informing the council about the situation for the council tax).

its a bit... low isn't it? she just came back from her holiday too. she was the one that rung me in the morning to say that upstairs apparently heard disturbance which turned out to be me being burgled.

Unfortunately if you have a contract and haven't given notice you will need to continue to pay rent. Talk to your landlord and agree to pay as little as possible, they may understand. If they don't, you're stuck sorry.

My heart goes out to the OP. My mum and dads home was burgled when we were all kids asleep in bed. They used the prop for the washing line to pry open the window and wiped their shoes on the curtains. I do not remember what was stolen but it shook my mum that badly she put the house on the market and moved in the sticks.

duff-man - by forensics, I mean copying the contacts, text messages and pictures. wouldn't interfere at all and the police are aware too. even if your finger prints are on it, that's ok because they took my prints beforehand and can easily eliminate it.

as for the possible relation with the person upstairs - no idea.

By doing what you've done, you've made that piece of evidence useless. There is no evidence continuity and you've interfered with the integrity of the phone. Whilst your fingerprints may be eliminated they're likely to have made any viable prints of the suspects useless.

Seeing as there wasn't much to go on already, you're only aiding the guy who did this.

So he's got a some evidence that the police can't use instead of some evidence that the police won't use.

Urm, maybe this is the silver lining to your horribly dark cloud....

if your moving to america, surely you will have to pay a fortune to take your stuff with you?

now you have less stuff, so less to pay out when you move!?!?!

(not much consolation i know, but when you have a crappy situation, i suppose you have to try and make the best of it!)

I know you cant claim back the business stuff, but surely you normal contents were covered?

If so, ham it up... say you had a 360, ps3, ipad, vita, iphone 5 or whatever... just max out your claim amount, you might not get it all back, but sod it, you are going to lose out it seems.. so play the system to get what you can.

I know you might need receipts/boxes/PoP etc but see if you can borrow something like that from a mate.

Your call, but if you are leaving the UK anyway in the future - milk it, thats what insurance is there for.

Yup, insurance fraud is a great idea :rolleyes:

Sorry to hear about this OP. I can't offer much advice aside from saying that defrauding your insurers is probably not the way forward.

Seriously do NOT do this, why you're encouraging him to break the law and commit insurance fraud on a public forum beggers belief.

You'd be surprised about how many people do talk about their insurance fraud on forums and other social media - and then wonder why they get caught.

To the OP, try not to think of the incident as a personal attack against you. When I was burgled I kept going over the "why me" question, feeling like I had been singled out. In the end I spoke with Victims Support who were really good at getting things back on track for me and the family.

Good luck to you.

Sorry to hear you got burgled.. It sucks! :(

I've been done twice over the last couple years, once while I was asleep upstairs to get my car, and again on my birthday this year when I come home to find my house had been trashed. The second time hit me hard because of the mess and the fact they'd been through all my things. I'm still paranoid about it, leave lights on all the time and get flashbacks to the state of the house every time I come home from work and open the front door! I worry every time I'm away over night now too!

Best of luck getting your stuff back though! Give Victims Support a ring too.. I wish I had!

Feel for you OP, really do.

I luckily stopped an attempted burglary on me last halloween, they literally kicked the whole door in they knocked first I ignored it thinking it was trick or treaters this was late and then all of sudden I hear a bang and I ran downstairs with a hammer going MENTAL. They probably got one hell of a shock.

Reason I went mental? I had literally 10k or more worth of musical equipment down there and which I basically need as MY JOB. If it had got stolen I'd have been ruined no joke....have no conents insurance.

I was never able to sleep again after that, I had extreme paranoia I'd hear a noise run downstairs with a hammer/knife.

Hopefully you had insurance, it won't replace the things that really matter but at least you can get some stuff back. The hard drives is a big one, I keep all my stuff backed up various places as I have a lot of important info if it got nicked i'd have been screwed too..
Sorry, but

With insurance excess being £500 it wasn't worth claiming - would have got 200 back maximum, and would have cost me more than that for increased premiums in the next few years...

Insurance companies love this urban myth, avoids paying out on so many claims people might otherwise make :v

Home insurance is not the same as car insurance and claiming often makes no difference to your premiums, unless you're claiming like 3 times a year of course.

No forced entry, no broken glass. Seems some kind of inside job. No one else has the keys except me and the landlord.

Did the Police ask the landlord anything about this? Or do they think the burglar 'picked' the lock (not sure how plausible that is based on my limited knowledge of lock picking - mainly based on films..)

Eurolocks front and back, keep doors locked even when I'm in and windows.

Euro locks can be bumped or snapped in seconds and the thieves can get in with virtually no noise. You can get more expensive locks that are anti bump/snap, but these are not often fitted to standard doors and have to be specified.

One of the easiest ways they can get in is through any downstairs toughened glass window, or double doors etc. Quick tap of an emergency glass breaking hammer stolen from a bus and they are in. Very little noise, nice safe squares of glass so they dont cut their selves and takes seconds. You need to pay a bit more and get laminated glass. I say it all the time but people never listen and just want the cheapest option.

ill try my best to answer some questions asked (again, thanks for all your nice comments/thoughts. its appreciated and welcomed)

the police haven't asked the landlord anything. I got a call from them (as I kept asking them to call me back!!)

basically, the guy is released on bail. he answered "no comment" on questions. they let another guy go on the same day last week.

no idea when the court date will be. no idea if he will plead guilty or not guilty either. but she was like "well we cant find your stuff" - sure but did you check his place and his other "mates" places?

he is known to the police.

as for the person who said that I have "damaged evidence" - actually, you could not be any more wrong.

im so annoyed. its like no one gives a crap. why do I pay so much tax? what the heck do I get from it? NOTHING!!!!!!

So now I have rented a storage facility.
I have no means to move things around as I don't drive.
I need to move my belongings to it ASAP and move out.

does anyone know what companies can help provide services to move your belongings? I don't need a removal company I don't think. I also don't have friends local who can help :-/

there is still no guarantee I will be moving. so I cannot keep "hanging on". need to be still in the normal way. plus all the stuff I have is what I need - period. I don't buy things I don't need.
