I'd say go for the PS4.

Forget about the launch line-up he's not getting it until Christmas so that's not a day one consideration, there's not many 9 years olds here giving you their opinion on what's good any most don't even think of Knack when talking about a launch lineup on PS4.

You need to consider what is the best console and best value and that I'd say it is the PS4 without doubt.

Most of the people here are buying the console for themselves and buying the games themselves. The money you'll save on the console will buy another game or 2 and the PS4 has some really good F2P stuff to. Couple that with PSN+ that is also better for the pocket than Gold on Xbox as you get some really good 'recent' games for basically nothing.. again keeping the kids happy without breaking the bank every month.

Honestly, I can't see any reason to recommend an Xbone for what you and your son needs.

Does he play online with friends in co-op/multiplayer? If so, I'd heavily lean towards the console that most of the others are getting.

Looking at the exclusives so far, they are kind of 50/50 in terms of suitability for a 9 year old. Xbox has Minecraft: XO Edition, Sunset Overdrive, Forza, Fable Legends. PS4 has DriveClub, Knack and Rime.

Honestly though, unless you want it to be a surprise, I'd agree with XeNoN89 and just ask him which he prefers.

I imagine the cheaper pricing point will be the big seller this time around.

PS4 is cheaper than the XboxONE. So there's a very good chance it will be more popular with parents and youngsters.

So there's a chance it'll be more popular amongst your kids friends

I don't console anymore, Xbox was always my go to console tho.

but

I'd choose PS4 this time for all the things listed ^^^

PS4 and a copy of Knack will probably go down well.

This. It's also looking to be the best value for money so far too (in terms of the console itself, the games are subjective).

You could also grab some classics like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro on the PSN store which I'm sure he'll enjoy.

4 people have recommended a Wiiu, when he has stated in OP that he has a Wiiu....

Anyway, my recommendation would be to find out which consoles his friends are likely to get (if they are getting), and if perhaps work out with the parents which way to go.

If it seems many are undecided, or are not getting either, then I would steer towards PS4 personally.

Didn't get to the bottom of the first post, Didn't think anyone owned a wii u ;)

PS4 it is then.

Cheaper with more power, exclusives will come as they did with ps3 and they will be outstanding.

3d Mario is out soon, he might like that.

PS4

It's cheaper and more powerful. Launch titles wouldn't sway to into anything. I'll be keeping mine for years. Also, many of the xbox exclusives might end up on the PC like last time, and you already have one of those in the house.

This is my take on it...

Xbox One

Better launch line up
Better controller (historically, I haven't had hands on time with either new controller yet)
XBL is a better service than PSN
Has better media features

PS4

More powerful hardware, at a cheaper price
More games available at launch (though a lot are Indie games which may/may not appeal)
PS+ gives far better free games than XBL Games with Gold
Online gaming no longer free (except for a few free to play games)

That's all my own opinion of course.

Personally; I don't think the launch line up is that important, I mean, these consoles are going to be around for a while, there will be more titles on the horizon soon.

Xbox Live at present offers a better service than the PlayStation Network, but Sony will be making changes, as with the line up, I imagine the gap between the two will be closed as Sony improve their service, which they undoubtedly will do.

The Xbox has better media features? I've not paid much attention to the media features on either console as they aren't something I'm overly interested in, the PlayStation 4 plays Blu Rays / 3D Blu Rays & I imagine (/hope) the Xbox One does too, so beyond that I'm not interested.

I think there isn't much between the controllers myself, have you had hands on? I really think Sony have done fantastic things with the new Dual Shock and it is fantastic personally, the Xbox One's controller isn't as much of a selling point, I mean, it's nice and feels good, but it feels very similar to the previous controller, not keen on the triggers. I liked the size and weight of the Xbox 360 controller before, huge fan and not a huge fan of the PlayStation 3 controllers, but that's changed.

There is also the internet services that on Xbox are hidden behind the 'golden wall', unless that has changed and no such wall exists on PlayStation 4. Having to be an Xbox Live member to access Netflix et cetra, now, this doesn't bother me per say (I have a SMART television) but it is for some people.

The PlayStation 4 is more powerful & available at a lower price, which is a huge selling point for many people. I've also seen a lot of commentators say that developers will obviously get the most out of the Xbox One and the gap will not seem so big, but by that logic developers should be able to get the most out of the PlayStation 4 and there will be a gap :p.

Again, I've mentioned the games and online services above, I'll add that I don't think paying for an online gaming service is a bad thing, as you can see what that investment has done in terms of Xbox Live.

That's just me commenting on your Pro's and Con's list.

PS4 and Knack.

Cheaper, more powerful. Beyond that you could argue either way, but then it makes the decision far too complicated.
