Road Cycling Essentials

If you wan't to ride your MTB go do it on a trail or off road where it will actually be fun. Covering a normal road ride will not be fun.

Believe me, I know, it would be more an exercise in curiosity than anything else. We have one guy who comes out with us on a Boardman hybrid with skinny tyres, due to back problems, and he's a bit of a beast, but we've had other guys come out on mountain bikes having massively overstated their abilities who have to turn round after 6 miles because they can't hack the first hill we come to. I'd be curious to see how I get on riding a route I know I can manage fine on a road bike and see how much worse it is on a mountain bike.

D'oh, Herne Hill doesn't do track inductions for novices during winter!

Have to wait until March before I can try out the track.

Anyone want my Cateye Cordless 2 cycle computer for free?

been sitting here gathering dust for years, I don't have any of the cables/sensors, just the computer itself, screen is scratched but not heavy

if anyone can make use of it, email me from my trust

Another death on CS2 yesterday

Seriously needs painting over and coming back to when they know what the **** they're doing

Not entirely sure when to replace road tyres due to the limited tread, but if the centre strip is completely smooth, few small nicks here and there and the sidewall slightly cracking then that's a pretty much 'why am I still riding on those tyres?' right?

My Zaffiro Pro tyres were sent out today so hopefully have it this week. Got the chain wear indicator the other day and the chain has stretched more than 1% so ordered the SRAM PC850. Think I might need new brake pads soon as well.

Nope, but the teeth still look mint (minus the dirt). The bike itself is only about a year and hasn't done 1000 miles (well, if the guy selling it spoke the truth). Do I really still need to change it?

Edit: And it still shifts ok.

Super annoying commute home today. Idiot blocked me from overtaking (he was going super super slow) and then precoded to meander back and forth in and out of the cycle lane to make sure everyone behind him was stuck at below walking speed. Sigh.

I've removed the original swearing from my helpful diagram.

Trainer Road

Done the FTP test today, so what next?

looked through the workout list and the names are odd, I haven't a clue what each one does
I wish I could filter by type

like "climbing" or "endurance" or "sprinting"
etc

I want to do some ones dedicated to climbing, but no clue where to start

What do you think guys?

That IS annoying! I probably would've just mounted the pavement and overtaken.

That reminds me. Some complete idiot went into me today. Only going slow because I couldn't quite go past them; my front wheel was by his rear wheel. And then they decided to turn in left into a car park without indicating and knocking me (didn't fall off thankfully). Didn't even stop to see if I was alright  The car behind pulled over to see if I was ok though.

That was my first run-in ('scuse the pun) bike vs. car but even at such a slow speed it's still quite an impact (bike's undamaged fortunately; only just got it!). Made me realise how vulnerable we actually are on bikes with absolutely no protection. It's quite scary to think how much you could get injured going just 10mph, let alone 15/20/30mph.

I had a mixed introduction to commuting to London by bike today. My journey in was excellent, I had a nice clear run and got to work quicker than I expected. There was almost no traffic, though that was due to me leaving home at 04:45 (I had a 06:00 start today). The only minor issue was that my front derailer struggled to shift from the big to small ring. I suspect that this is probably a result of me having never used the small ring on that bike before - I've only used the big ring in the year or so I've had it. I decided to ride entirely in the small ring, just to be on the safe side.

Unfortunately, I made the novice mistake of not turning off my Garmin when I got to work, so by the time I came home, the battery was flat. I got lost pretty quickly, and only by blind luck did I stumble upon a sign for cycle route 23, which runs down to Crystal Palace. It took me longer than the ride in, but even so it wasn't too bad.

My plan is to cycle up to work a couple of times at the weekend to get the route in my head, then commute a few times a week until I'm back up to speed. Strava challenges will get a whole lot easier once I'm commuting 100 miles a week :D

thats a ridiculous price for those  i have the 24mm version great wheels, dont think i can justify buying a set of these though unfortunately :(

on an aside got my winter bike up and running today pending arm sorting itself out, went for cheap and cheerful Michelin Lithion 2 in 25mm at £12 each as although i do ride in the wet its not normally by choice so hopefully these should stand me in good stead, also sorted out front and rear lights etc, looking forward to getting back on it, just need my bone to hurry up and heal !

Sorry, but... You shouldn't have been hanging on his shoulder like that. You may even have been in something of a blind spot, depending on how his mirrors were set up.
