Found an iPad on the street

Are you a *****?

No - Hand it in to the nearest police station.
Yes - Hand it in to the nearest police station you ***** ****.

Why not suggest he fix the screen and hand-deliver it to the original owner too? :p

It's been lost, hand it in to the police and forget about it. If you can't get any owner info off it easily there's not much else to be done.
:p I'd hardly say it's a stretch to find the email address and chuck the owner an email saying "gotz your iPad lolololol"

If he is willing to take time off work to take it to the police station, and he lives in London, he may also be able to easily take it to an Apple shop and get additional information that may return it to the owner.

Maybe I'm just good like that, but I wouldn't have much faith in the police to trace the owner, beyond waiting for the owner to show up looking for an iPad.

My guess is, it was being used by a child in the back of a car and it got dropped out of the window. The fact that it was on the web page for stocks could be a red herring, as a younger child may have randomly hit a link to open the stock data in Safari.

What is on the device depends on if it is 3G/4G or Wifi. You can extract a fair amount of data from it with forensic software.

Likewise with the IMEI number on the device, I/Police can check to see if it has been lost/stolen/blacklisted etc.

What should you do? Go to the Police and hand it in, their forensic team will be able to work their magic. If the screen is fubared, it is no use to you anyway.

I don't imagine they will be putting time and effort into carrying out a forensic investigation on it, they'll log it, stick it in a box and wait for someone to claim it.

Personally i'd wait a week or so to see if the email gets replied to so then atleast you know its definitely going to the owner. after that hand it in to the police.

I emailed them last night when I found it. Problem is I think that email address was just being used for junk, and as such isn't checked very often.
I'll just leave it with the police, the nearest apple store is too far out of the way, and I doubt they could do much more than the police can do.

What's to stop people from handing things in to non-local police stations and reducing the likelihood that people will claim their lost items?

Lost property all gets recorded and then sent somewhere central, it wont reduce the chances of it being claimed. The police will not try and trace the owner, they'll book it in and it'll sit in a cupboard unless someone trys to claim it.

As others have advises, I would phone Apple and explain what's happened. They may well contact the owner on your behalf. Apple are the best people to have it reunited. I found a BlackBerry in the road and phoned Orange, who on my behalf contacted the person registered to the SIM. Turns out the phone was broken but it had many precious photos on. Don't he right thin

I've only skimmed the thread but it sounds very much like the OP is looking for encouragement or justification for keeping an ipad that isn't his. Would that be the gist of it?

Take it to a non-local Police station but don't take it to Apple.

Enquire about the returns policy which the Police operate.

Ask about the potential fixability of the item, including a picture.

Takes the time to connect the ipad to his own iTunes but won't take the time to do anything meaningful to get the ipad back to its owner.

That's some classy behaviour right there.

but are happy to imply the guy is dishonest? :(

  • Naturally, my next thought is to hand it into the police
  • I was going to be handing it in tomorrow anyway, need to take some time off work to though
  • Well, just spent 10 minutes walking to the police station, only to find that it's closed.
  • I emailed them last night when I found it
  • the nearest apple store is too far out of the way
and he's not connected to iTunes because the connector is different.

I skimmed the responses but read every one of your posts. Your focus seems very much on what's in it for you (free iPad!) rather than getting it back to the owner. Take it to the Police station; all the other stuff (connecting their iPad to your iTunes etc etc) is just noise.

Why are you saying "your", I'm not iviv?
I've merely bullet pointed a few statements of his that you've twice said you've read but to me you appear to have disregarded or misunderstood.

Read my post, he's tried taking it to the Police station, now he's naturally considering what happens next in the event of a non claim. He's done everything reasonable to contact that owner.

If that was my missing iPad I would be happy for him to have found it, even if he's allowing himself the fantasy of maybe getting it back from the police, who wouldn't?

Edit.
Still waiting on a response, if I was being called out on a statement implying dishonesty, I would be a little keener to defend my position. I hope iviv makes the same point.

Thanks - I never knew that :)

It's magnolia. I wasn't going to rise to him, but I appreciate your support!

Still no reply to the email, so I've brought it to work and will be taking it to the nearest 24 police station. No, it isn't the nearest one, but that is only open 9-5, and I work 8-6 so it would mean missing a couple of hours of work. And good to hear it goes somewhere central, I assumed that they would at least have a centralised database, otherwise you would need to visit 10 different police stations if you dropped or lost something but didn't know where.
