Toasted Sandwiches & Sandwich Toasters

I miss toasted sandwiches and I currently don't have the facility to make that molten cheese in the crisp bread shell.

Last time I was in Tesco they had two own brand versions which looked identical. Neither looked very good.

Is there such a thing as a good sandwich toaster or are they all going to do the same job?

Can anyone recommend one they use.

As it will probably go this way anyway; share your toasted sandwich techniques and fillings.

My mum's still her 1970's toasted cheese sandwich maker, think it's Tefal with the cotton wrapping round the power cord, oooozes black gooo from several orifices when hot but makes the best toasted cheese sammich in the land.
 
I got one that I bought from Argos which I haven't used in ages. It's got removable washable hot plates so reasonably easy to clean (compared to others I've had).

The best filling I've had is something my mum used to make for me. It was like chicken tikka but had peas and potato in too.

Don't get a crappy Panini press, it's for pussies. Get the classic normal sandwich press that seals the edges. What some hack, cheese and tom sauce in there and you're good!

A proper panini press is way better than a sandwich toaster. For starters, you can cook actual paninis :p which are way way nicer than toasted sandwiches. You can also use it to cook awesome super crispy bacon (I don't do this often but when I have it was like having confit bacon - so good).
 
Any will do, parents still have one which must be 30 years old, it certainly looks like it.
The only issue is either theyre all crap design or bread slice size has changed. None fit a standard size slice in it properly (well there maybe one or two)
Bloody hate toasters and sandwhich toasters, ita like they were deisgned by idiots, luckily rarely eat bread these days so not much of an issue.
Would be such a great thing for a kickstarter campaign and no need for one to cost £100 just to fit a normal sized slice in it.
 
The presses allow you to do more, but they don't have the shaped recesses that give the toasted sandwich it's characteristic textures and compressed toasted edge seals.

Man, I'm hungry. That peperoni/jalapeno/gouda effort further up sounds superb!

Sandwich toasters are good, but many, including Brevilles, do not seal properly and you end up with cheese dripping everywhere.

I would get a press every time. As said, far more versatile.

yep, ive the same as well, had it for about 2 years but not used it for 1yr+
think il get it back out again for some cheese n ham toastie goodness, its good for doing bacon on as well for the odd bacon sarnie
i found the lid quite heavy though so the toasties come out quite thin.. even with thick sliced bread, before i stopped using it i had thought of placing some small metal rods (~15mm) in each corner to stop it from pressing down so much
