New (old) house renovation to have distributed AV!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they have been promising the heating stuff will be 'soon' for well over a year (I'm waiting for it as well) so unless there's been something new on it that I haven't seen yet, I wouldn't expect anything in the near future.

There has been an update last month showing model numbers and images of the kit, so im assuming its nearer than it has been in the past.

Great thread, just wondering is there any ventilation in your AV cupboard if so what do you have?
I'll be using a shower extractor inline fan to vent out of the cupboard back into the house in the stairwell as i dont have any heating there so this will help and it wont be wasted energy.

Painted the reveals in the spare room, had to remove some left over bits of paper and give it a sand prior to painting.

Radiator fitted and plumbed in and painted with 2 coats of enamel in the master bedroom.

Finally got some banana plugs for my speaker wire to make connecting up a lot easier.

Fitted to the amp, forgot that i have 9 speakers but run 11 channels so ive ordered some more plugs.

Got myself another bargain on ebay, 24port gigabit switch, installed and tested working!

All gloss done in this room, speaker grills on and all socket fronts installed ready for the carpet on the 14th

Showing a bit of the frog tapes success here, got the delicate surface stuff this time round and its easier to apply and remove and gives just as good a finish.

I've screwed all the floorboards down in the 2 rooms and going through my snag list to try get the rooms as finished as possible before the carpets go in.

Ive terminated some more of my network cables and tested those.

I'll be making a start on the landing/stairs/hall next along with more glossing in the bathroom and then onto the living room from there.

How come you went with the Onkyo 515? I ask as I'm currently looking at an AV amp and have discounted the 515 and am considering either the 626 or even the 727 now. I'd have thought the 727 would appeal more as it has 3 zone setup so you can listento 3 seperate sources in different rooms. Theres a nice bundle too on richer sounds for £1100 with the Q acoustics 2050i 5.1 speakers.

I've got the 515 because its what i had in my previous property, i have had a 626 delivered this morning to run my other 2 zones, my 5.1 setup in the living room and kitchen on 2.0. the 515 will be running 2.1 for the bedroom and then 2.0 in the bathroom.

The 727 does have a zone 3 but its not powered so would need another amplifier to drive the speakers for that room which is more cost again.

I also managed to get another 2 CPC Silver speakers so i'll have 5 of those in the living room, i havent decided on a sub to use just yet.

Today i had plans for all sorts but as things are getting closer to the carpets being installed (thursday) for the 2 bedroom they sort of took priority!

Ive installed the vent into the cupboard using a core drill though one of the side walls which is directly above the stairs, ducting will be ran from there to an inline fan and then heat exhausted via a vent onto the stairway.

I had to remove the amp and shelving to do this so i decided to put it back as its going to be used once the house is finished so not a temp setup just to get some sound.

cables were ran and shortened, terminated and then i installed the switch & tested the network. Please ignore the horrendous superhub im forced to use until i get my full package moved to this address once i move.

Tomorrow will be more of the same really, doing things that make little difference but take time, i've got to roller the touch up points in both bedrooms and gloss the full bathroom after caulking. Whilst i do this my dad is going to be sanding and doing more filling on the stairs.

Off camera we have also ran a few extra cables into the office area which you've not seen a picture of for a while as its a dump for wood at the moment but we've decided to overboard that area as the previous electrics that were taken out were that badly fitted that half of the walls are gone.

I've got a TX-NR626 to install into the cupboard tomorrow to get my other 2 zones working. im hopefully going to have one of my hdmi over cat6 units this week so there might be a picture of that in testing with a spare tv i have to test the cabling and make sure its up to the task of 1080p.

wow. just read through the whole thread. fantastic work!

a cheeky question if i may, how much does it cost doing it (mostly) diy?

Some seriously impressive work there, nicely done and some excellent finishing.

Couple of questions

1. How come you used compression fittings on the plumbing as opposed to soldered joints (Yorkshire)? and in some places you could have bent the pipe, would have saved you a bit of cash.

2. No underfloor heating? or is it planned still?

3. Have you lost motivation at any point? Me and my missus moved into our house and had to live out of one bedroom as the rest was a building site, it really wears you down after 5 months.

4. Can you come and finish my kitchen and bathroom?

Ive spent about 7.5k so far, i still need to spend another £2k on windows and doors. about £7 on the kitchen i want with my Neff appliances, then there is carpets, furniture etc all to buy because its our first home we have nothing.

Ease of use, there not that expensive & tight 90' bends

2. No underfloor heating? or is it planned still?

No underfloor, its been removed from my mind due to it really being something i wouldn't use after thinking about it

3. Have you lost motivation at any point? Me and my missus moved into our house and had to live out of one bedroom as the rest was a building site, it really wears you down after 5 months.

Yes, a few weeks ago i got fed up of doing all of the tiny jobs that look like no progress is being made now its coming to final finish its taking more time and not progressing as fast as the previous stage.

4. Can you come and finish my kitchen and bathroom?

No. just about got the energy to keep going with mine!

My fantastic wife bought me an early christmas present, TX-NR626!!!!

Wiring up, no sources for HDMI or HDMI>CAT yet so nothing there but will be added at a later date

Onkyo have changed the streaming service they use so the music is streamed at different times if listeing to the same station, i'll solve this by having some airport express or ATV there so i can sync up the sound from my library or phone while streaming.

We were struggling to touch up the walls and ceiling on the stairs so we've decided it would be best to plaster this (room?). My dad made a start on that today.

Starting to look a whole lot better than it did before.

You could solve this by taking the line out of the amp with the streaming service you want to use into the other amp, if you do go down the airplay route the ATV only has an HDMI out which a lot of home cinema amps can't pass independently to a second zone so the airport express is needed for an analogue output.

£35 is very reasonable! I've been looking at 24 port Linksys for about £85, but that tops it. :D

Great updates btw, really is coming together nicely. Awaiting the next tranche of updates!

Managed to pick it up on ebay, also got another ebay bargain. Octava hdcatir hdmi over cat sender with ir for £63 vs £180 new. This should be here soon. Once it arrives I'm quite excited to have some video to go with the sound in my remote locations.

Update with images to follow later tonight.
